DS trouble codes?

should the direct scan give me a trouble code when the key is on but engine not running.

nope, you'll know if it detects a trouble code as there will be a red sentence across the bottom of the screen flashing at you.

thats what is happening now though,
with the key on and engine not running it flashes the T trouble code sign.
then i go to see what code and it says code 51 e prom error.

But when the car is started and idling there are no trouble codes present?
any ideas?

That's a stored error in the ECM. With the key off, unplug the orange wire that runs to the battery. That'll clear the ECm and your trouble code will go away. http://www.gnttype.org Plenty of info there. RTFM
