Is there a way to "save" a scene from a DVD? Like maybe select a 30 second spot within the movie and save it as an MPG or AVI file? I've never tried and wouldn't know what to use...

* You could "rip" it, then with software crop or edit out the portion you want.

** You could also use a capture card installed in the computer. One cheaper way to do this is with a DAZZLE or equiv... these are hardware devices that go between your DVD player and computer usually connected via USB for simplicity so you dont need to open the computer. CompUSA and the like have them. You can choose to record only the portion you want or get the whole thing and edit later (almost all of these come with basic software).

*** Send the DVD to a buddy or use a local conversion service to do it for you.

**** Finally, you can see if someone else already has this in a file format. Rather than point you closer to adware, porn, and browser hijackers I'll just say it might already be done and on the internet. This assumes you are working with something commercially made.

If you tell me what scene from which movie, I may be able to help. If not, I can probably help. Shoot me an email and we'll see what we can do...

When I RIP a DVD, all I see is VOB files. I have no idea how to get from a VOB to any usable format.

My son got me a DVD of some local (Houston) area fast cars, most running 4.60 - 5.50 in the 1/8 mile and a couple hitting 200 in the 1/4. It's got about a minute of a red '69 Camaro bouncing off the rear bumper (almost went over!), clearing all 4 wheels, recovering and continuing on down the track. I'd sure like to save that section as a more manageable MPG file...

There are plenty of tools and methods to rip scenes out of DVD movies (note: VOB files have MPEGs imbedded in them). Try ImTOO DVD Ripper or just type "VOB MPEG conversion" into Google and look for freeware or shareware.
