I was wondering why there's a hole in the intake that seems to be routed to the EGR. What's the purpose of this.

Here's a picture to show what I'm talking about.

Let me try this again with the picture

This allows the EGR to function. When the valve opens it allows exhaust gas to be recirculated back through the intake and introduced to the incoming fresh mixture. EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

Hi Bryan,

Based on your response to this post and my porting post. It seems that pluging this up would increase performance. This hole is throwing hot exhaust gases into the intake, correct? So wouldn't it be a performance important to eliminate this heat source from the intake?

Thanks Again!

To some extent it should help keep heat out of the intake. Under WOT throttle the EGR does not cycle, so there are no gases let into the intake at that time. Alot of chips disable the EGR function anyway.

Yes, the engine can run with or without the EGR. However, if running the intake without it, make sure the chip has been programmed to account for that. What the EGR does for our cars is to prevent pre-detonation on light throttle up small grades. If the chip has not accounted for the lack of an EGR, you will experience knock when going up hills on light throttle.

EGR is strictly for emissions. The reason cars knock with a disabled EGR that don't have a chip burned to ignore it is because the factory chip runs higher timing when EGR is engaged to make up for diluted intake charge.

I know we don't use ours and just had the hole covered, when we had the intake done.
