My 84 GN has been idleing like crap for the last month. It would seem to run ok short of being a little sluggish and stumbling somewhat out of the gate. No codes and numbers seemed to be in the OK range (Via my otc2000). I thought it might be a vacuum problem so I was trying to chase down a bad vacuum hose. When I unplugged the EGR valve hose it smoothed out. Idle ran just a bit high (around 1400 rpm) but it was smooth as silk. It made little change when I blocked this hose with my finger. Throttle response seemed to be better as well. Does an EGR valve go bad? Is it worth replacing or is there another option?

Apply vacuum to the EGR valve and see if it holds, if not you might have a leaking diaphragm.
