As long as it is a good connection, can you splice the wires back together on the EGT thermocouple? We have cut wires on a local car. The readings are not affected are they?

Wasn't a problem for me. I had to shorten the line from my SMC EGT probe kit and I just cut them where I needed and reattached them inside the probe end to the screw terminals.

This is one of those "in theory you shouldn't do it, in practice it's ok on an egt gauge" things :D. When you cut a thermocouple wire and splice in a piece of copper wire, each joint puts another thermocouple in series with the one in the exhaust. So long as the splices are close to the same temperature (both under the hood or both inside the car) they pretty much cancel each other out, and since even if they are a little different they are both a lot different than the 1000-1600 deg F exhaust so you won't see a problem. Just don't do it when you are trying to measure temperatures close to room temperature.
