Emergency Help Needed - WOT Shifts Only - Pan is Off

Since yesterday I can only get shifts at high MPH. I just dropped the pan and inspected the TV cable pivot bracket inside. It looks like it pushes a shaft that goes in to the valve body. This shaft sticks out only like about an inch from the VB. It looks like it should be out lotsmore to meet the TV pivot lever. If I push in on it it has spring tension. Is this normal? Or does fluid pressure push it out more in operation?

I did not see a spring in the pan and the governer is not loose. What else should I check/be wrong?

So you have taken the pan and governor cover off and checked the governor for a missing spring?
Are you saying the springs were in place?

Almost sounds like the TV cable is broken if the lever isn't touching the plunger. Pull on the cable at the engine end & see what it does.

I did not remove the governer cover. I only observed that there was no spring laying in the pan.

After the fluid and filter change, driving today, the 1-2 shift is at about 18 MPH vs. 27 MPH yesterday. The 2-3 shift is in the 40's. The 3-4 is at about 70 MPH. Yesterday I could not get 4th even going 85 MPH.

The TV is not broken. It just looks like the plunger should stick out further from the valve body to make contact with the lever.

To me it sounds like the TV is hanging up a bit.

So how do I free it? When I push in on the plunger, it moves freely. The spring tension pushes it out 3/4 to 1 inch. I can pull the plunger out a lot farther. What is the travel length of the TV plunger?

The fluid was quite dirty. Could some gunk be getting in the way someplace. Is there any "magic solution" that can be poured in the tranny to free up or dissolve the gunk that may be where it should not?

It might be possible this spring is broken too.

Looks like the valve body must come off. Not for me. Off to the tranny shop.
