Bedroom is 22'x11' with 14 stairs leading up to it and the closet. ruffly about 480 square feet of carpet. Empire came and did an estimate there best carpet with the thickest padding and the guy said $3400. I told him I would have to think about it and he dropped the price to $1500. I still didn't take it because I wanted to shop around some more but is that a good price?

i own a flooring store and you need 30 yards of carpet and at $1500 he is charging you over $40 a yard and $15 per step,it better be wool and waterproof pad....he is hi,and if he said $3400 the first time and dropped it to $1500 he is a thief...p.m me and let me know if thier is a pro-source local to you,im sure their is,they are nation wide and i have a business account with them and can get you any carpet available threw them for alot less money, along with the pad...and they may be able to set you up with a good installer(which is the most important thing)...also what kind of carpet was it?the only outragious priced carpets are wool, leather(yes leather),and tuftex frazie line(chic to chic)and(ambience),and sisal/wicker..$1500 is a hi bid,but $3400 he was ripping you off and dont deserve your business..imo

If he dropped the bill that much, I would have told him that he could drop it even more. And if he didn't, then I would have fed him to my dog. Thief! Actually, I wouldn't do that, I don't feed my dog greasy, slimey food, she eats well.

I can tell you from my personal experience, Empire Carpet salesmen are crooks. I had one very stupid one who sat in my kitchen laughing and telling me how he had cheated an old woman and then become very serious and start telling me about the deal he had for me. He was driving a new Mercedes. He also dropped the price several thousand dollars.

I have dealt with Empire before. Go to Menards and Home Cheapo first and get a price. Then have Empire come out and give a quote. DO the math in your head of about 1/3 the Empire quote. Double check that against your Home Depot quote. That 1/3 number should be a little less then the Home Depot. Then tell him Home Cheapo quoted you xxxx (the 1/3 number).

He will match it right away (he may pretend to call a "sales manager" - let him)

Its an easy way to get a decent price and have carpet the next day....

I heard about someone that was having a carpet installed by Empire and the installer had to leave because he was either on work release or recently paroled. This made the person a little nervouse. It wouldn't bother me. The way I figure is they have more to lose if they screw up, of course, I wouldn't leave jewelry lying around, but I wouldn't do that anyways.

I had Empire do my son's playroom this spring with a decent Berber carpet and pad. Was just a bit over $700 for a 12 x 20 ft room. Salesman was a decent guy but the installers didn't speak a word of English and I didn't leave them out of my site. They did a nice job and we are happy with how everything went.

home depot installers are not usually too good, but they do background checks on them.....the reason i say they are not usually too good is..why would some awesome installer deal with these great offers from home depot  1)you get paid lees than most all other stores pay..2)your paycheck is paid up to 3 weeks in the rear..3)if you have a problem on the job or need more money for unseen problems that the sales guy missed, you have to call a 1-800 number and talk to someone that dont want to pay you and who talks down to you,in most cases..most of the best installers always want paid top dollar for top quality work,as that is the only work they know how to do..they dont like to waste time on a automated line, getting no-where..and they dont want to have money owed to far in the rear incase they decide to leave because in most cases they dont get it all...home depot sells alot of flooring, here in sarasota their is about 13-25 jobs a day going out of their installation company, the bad thing is i only know 5 awesome installers and can gaurantee their is not 15 in any town, they may say they are the best or real good, but the facts are not many people really do every job to their best, plain and simple...i live in sarasota,florida..call any big name store and ask them about me/Tom Burnette, most have heard of me and say i have a great reputation for perfection..they will say i charge alot, but you wont have problems..but now that i sell all flooring i can roll my hi priced labor in the bill and not mark up the carpet soo much and send them a awesome installer in a awesome looking van, clean cut, with a hi quality pad and a hi quality carpet for the same price as the big boys or cheaper,as i have a mobile store,no overhead=lower prices...point is shop around, dont use empire, compare with, but dont use home depot..find a store that is clean and nice ask for the best installer no matter how long it takes to get it in..and see if they can let you talk to some of the installers prior customers,i offer that to all my new customers....i call customers back,i show up on time,i call if im going to be even 10 minutes late,i call before going to the job,i dont smoke in or around the house(i dont smoke, this is what all my installers agree to)my van is kept clean,i vacuum and sweep the driveway,i try to act happy even tho im busting my butt..if you are a awesome installer and are paid well these and more qualitys come natural...i have heard some horror stories of getting carpet or flooring put in,they should write a book or make a movie because some are toooo funny...

I had Empire come out to my condo, they were definitley high. Both on carpet and laminate flooring. I asked the guy and he said it's all independently contracted, probably the reason for difference in pricing through different areas. The salesman didn't offer me any deals and pretty much couldn't wait to get out of there. It was however the first quote I got, so I wasn't really an educated customer. I ended up going to a local family owned store and got a very fair deal.

Yeah the empire salesman told me how they say the estimate is free but I was wasting his time. Like I should have felt sorry for him? When he went from 3400 to 1500 I new there was something wrong. I had a Luna carpet salesman come out yesterday and before I had even told him what Empire wanted he quated me at $1000. Thats for the plush carpet and 8 pound crush resistant padding. http://www.lunacarpet.com/00107_hemp.html This is what we are getting. What I like the most about it is that it not only is stain resistant but if I spill on it it won't go all the way threw to the padding. It will come in handy with a 2yr old. And it has a warranty that is transferable up to 7yrs.
