Re: SUV's spew more pollution???

Thank you Richard! ;) SUV's DO have to meet the same emission standards as other vehicles. And no...the LS1 in your Avalanch is basically the same engine. And the brown air in LA(I am assuming that's where you are at Matt)is caused from alot of other things besides the SUV's. I'm off topic again but here regular unleaded is $1.46 a gallon(that's the cheapest). Back under my rock now ;)

What other type of business can get away with arbitrarily raising it's prices by 1/3 just because they feel like it!? Oil can do it simply because they know they have us by the balls!

What other type of bussiness is so directly related to a commodity that fluccuates as much as crude oil? They make their biggest profits when crude is low. If crude goes up 50%, but gasoline only increase by 32.3%, they are loosing profit. And getting accused of price gouging at the same time.

Petroleum companies are for profit- they are not utilities. They are watch more closely than any other industry.

Suck it up, or buy a Hybrid. ;)

What I don't get is the price difference I see on the way to work. The area I normally buy gas, by work, is always a lot lower than the gas stations near where I live. It's not a lot, but .08 is a big margin, as gas goes. I was about empty, so I filled up at $1.77 and noticed that the usual places are at $1.68 (premium). I know we're better off than the rest of the country in this region, but just under 2 years ago we were right at $1/gal. Even under that for a while.
It's obvious that every Summer they find an excuse to raise gas prices since that's the big travel season. THAT is what's BS.

Our state Attorney General went after stations that raise the prices to gouge the public when the opportunity arose a while back. It was illegal. I don't see why they shouldn't go after the big guys the same way. I guess that goes back to the original post about the investigation.

But if the taxes stay the same then there really is not a 50% increase in cost to produce gas - just in one element of the oil, refine, transport machine that is needed to make the gas.

It was about four, maybe five, years ago when the oil went from about $20/bbl to about $10/bbl. Did the gas price drop? NO. But when it went from 10 to $11 in just a few months, there was lots of screaming about the 10% increase!!!

No lost profits.

It can be done alright but the problem is that when the ATF finds out what youre making and the gov isnt making any money off of it they tend to get a little POed. Then they do things like take your house, cars, money, and throw you in jail.

Just my living ~50ft from the moonshine capital of the world .02. :D :D

I think everybody in the US needs to give a big THANK YOU to all the SUV drivers. If it weren't for them, we would all be driving fuel efficient vehicles and nobody would complain loudly about gas prices slowly rising to $4 a gallon. Why do you think we pay less for gasoline than canada or any of the european countries. It is because we are a bunch of whiners that like big gas guzzling vehicles.

Just me .010256 gallons of gas ($.02)

Good point. I guess what I meant was if the overall cost to produce the gasoline went up 50% vs a 32% increase at the pump, THEN they would be loosing profits. Crude can double or triple in price very quickly.

You're right, production increases make it to the pump much faster than decreases. :(

Maybe I'm a little more tolerent to price increases than some. My father will drive miles out of his way to save 2¢ on a gallon.

Properly tuned SUV's put out no more pollution than a new car. That is documented by the mighty EPA and SCAMD. People that are bad mouthing SUV's are just falling into the hands of the wacko idiots that are trying to get everyone to be subject to their whims. If someone can afford a SUV, more power to them. No one has the right to either complain or condemn them for their ability to buy and maintain one as their vehicle of choice. Next they are planning on making everyone that owns a perfomance vehicle to have that right taken away also, are you gonna stand up and tell them to stick it then?

Next time your in the area lemme know and we'll see what we can do. :D If I didnt have a retired game warden living ~100 yards from me Id make my own fuel.

Oh, spelling never was a strong point for me... ;)

Keep a gallon in the trunk and if you get pulled tell the police it's for your alky inj. :D I got a couple old GN rad. laying around.

actually, SUV's do contribute to pollution more than passenger cars because their emissions are calibrated as light trucks and the standard is lower...don't get me wrong, I have a Yukon and love it, but it does spew more bad stuff than my Mu*tang

price of gas is what it is....supply and demand....that is called capitalism

The lower the MPG's, the more fuel consumed.
The more fuel consumed, the more emissions produced.
SUV typically get poor MPG's.
Thus they make more emissions.

That and they are hard to see around. Damn things are evil.

;)

I don't know about everywhere else, but around here diesel now costs more than unleaded...

Psychic? Not hardly...you can set your damn clock by the when the gas & diesel prices rise & fall.

*sigh* Yesterday I had to fill up the ol' Golf... the tank was getting low. I went to one of the cheaper stations in town and filled up. Handed the man my card to pay for it... price €49.50 ($58.00 or so). That comes out to about $4 a gallon... not for the premium stuff... this is the cheapo stuff. Lucky for us, we live in the city and to get anywhere is a short drive unlike the US. But I can't begin to tell you how happy I will be to go back to the US and put only $30 in my Trailblazer or GN and see the needle swing over the "F".

Yes, times are rough and I think these companies should be held to standards and prosecuted if they are illegally pricing gasoline. But as someone said before... it is a matter of relativity.

As for the SUVs putting out more smog... true, they do not get as good of mileage, although I think that is 'improving'. As for SUVs being held to lower standards, that may be true... but that doesn't mean that they DON'T get as good numbers as their lower slung counterparts. I haven't had to do emmisions tests yet but I'm sure the numbers rank right up there with the GNs numbers. And for the record.. I use my SUV.... towing, camping/off-road, hauling, etc....

Sorry.. this looked like a good vent thread.

Do you see more people on scooters and bikes out there, or are cars still dominant? $4/gal would explain that.

Cars are still dominant, but clearly more scooters, bikes, places for people to walk. Scooters, bicycles and pedestrians are considered 'traffic participants' and are given rights in traffic.

Also a lot of 'econoboxes'. I swear Germany is the country wear the econobox has survived and even flurished! You have things like this driving around all over the place.

The smart

There are more SUVs but nowhere near the amount in the US. Personally next spring I'm going to get a motorcycle just to have an extra set of wheels.

I've read about the Smart. Interesting car. I think you can take them to the dealership and cheaply replace all the fenders/hood to have a different colored car. SLOOOOW. Good purpose built car though.

Yes, the body panels are all removable and tradeable. That'd be a good and bad car for a criminal. Bad in that it probably can't out run many police cars yet good if you can get it home without being spotted. Have the spare panels, change 'em over and your a different car. Except the license plates of course. :P

3 cylinder turbo... manumatic tranny... 3 lug wheels... strange thing.
