i am rebuilding a motor that came out of an 87 that had a knock. we opened it up and found that it needs a new crank, which i just so happen to have. what are the most common things that need to be machined in these motors in (such as line honing). i know this is a pretty general quetion, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Studs on the mains, line hone. ARP rod bolts (be careful to fit em right) Keep the clearances pretty tight .0015 to .002 on both the rods and mains. If there is nothing wrong with the stock pistons, reuse em. Make sure that's a turbo crank!

how can i make sure that it is a turbo crank (mine came out of a 4.1, and the guy said it was the correct crank)?

Go over to gnttype.com and go to the photo guides. Look at the crankshafts, that will show you what you are looking for.
