Engine VIN derivative...where?

Having some strange developments with the GN which I purchased a few weeks ago. I'd like to check the engine to see if it's correct for the vehicle VIN. I know on old Corvettes (I have a '74) that the last 6 digits are stamped on the block. Is there a way to verify this for an '86 or '87?

its on, i beleive the drivers side of the block. Its on a small flat section that would just be able to fit the #'s.its also on the tranny..hope this helps
