engineer question

i am looking to buy a apt building, there is a seperation in the basement wall between the I beam and the block wall of about 8 inchs,(12 feet long) where the floor dropped. the owner said its been like that for 25 years( looks very old) can a engineer write something that the bank would except? there is no cracks outside, just inside, and what would the cost be for that type of letter? many thanks ed

definately needs a structural inspection

I would spend the money to get a structural engineer to come out , look it over , and give you some type of written report. I would look in the yellow pages under structural engineers and call around. ask them how long they have been performing inspections of this nature, how many(approximately) the inspector they are sending out has performed. This is to protect your investment and could cost quite a bit. My dad is a P.E. and does this type of work but he is in the DFW, Texas area so I would call someone morew in your neck of the woods. Often a city's Building & Code Dept will maintain lists of Structural Engineers that have been "approved" to do design work in that city.

This might be safer than pulling random names out of the yellow pages.
