Just got my motor back together and broke in yesterday. I changed the oil today and test drove. When I got home and put it in park the oil light came on. Pressure was at 0. Started it up about 20 minutes later, oil pressure was at 20 and dropped to 0 again. The only thing i did different to the motor was to put on one of those new front covers I had laying around. It had been worked by someone at one time. All the oil passages had been cleaned up. My bearings were at .0015 on the rods and mains and it has new cam bearings.

i just tried it again. Hot idle it stayed at 20 for a good 10 minutes befor it dropped to about 2-4 and then i shut it off. Rev it up it goes right back up. Going to put the stock cover back on.

What was the pump gear thrust clearance? That needs to be .001-.0015". The aftermarket covers are suspect at best. I've had to spend more than 5 hours trying to get them to work right. TA has an in-house machined cover that has better tolerances than a stock one. The stock GN timing covers were hand chosen for the cars. So they are better than the average Buick V6 timing cover. I have never had an issue with a stock cover unless it was eaten up from alot of debris going through it. TA sells pump shims that help set the thrust clearance easily. Surface plate the pump cover and try using plasti-gauge between the pump gears and pump housing cover (oil filter adaptor) to determine the thrust clearance. Use two pieces. One each gear. You will be amazed at how far off the pump cavity is from the factory. I have the cover machined flat by a good machinist so that the cavity is equal on all sides. Takes every bit of an hour to set the cover up on the mill to take a light fly-cut off the face. If the TA covers are as good as they say, then it would be money well spent. (but I'm a stubborn SOB and do it myself)o_O

cover is off. The gaskets will be in tomorrow and the stock cover is going back on. My oil pump was set up at .002 my me. I thought that waS WHERE IT BELONGED. Man i hate that cap button.

OK. Turbofab you nailed it. My clearance was .003 on one gear and would not even give me a reading on the other one. Stock cover is .0015 on both gears.
