While absolutely not required, it's highly recommended that you have one. Cleans up the air flow and makes readings more consistent.

Removing screens generally leans things out and makes the airflow reading less stable, especially around idle. However, the newer MAFs (LT1 and LS1) seem less sensitive to descreening than the stock MAF.
