When try to scan in realtime, I get a bunch of random numbers, followed immediately by a "Hardware Timeout" error. What should I try next? I've already cleaned the terminal on the ECM 3 times, there's nothing but shiny copper fingers there. I'm wondering if there is a problem in the ribbon cable or the parallell cable. Are these both standard pieces that I can pick up at Radio Shack? THe Laptop I'm using is an Abriva model # SN8660C. I've tried with another and get the same results. I'm open to any suggestions.

Try only pushing the connector about 1/2 onto the board.

Might try folding the ribbon part up, so it's not acting as an antenna. An ignition miss generates radio frquency noise, and can mess things up.

Thanks for the input, I've tried every position on the plug into the ECM, on,1/2 on, barely on and everyhting inbetween, nothing has worked yet. My ribbon cable has a braided steel cover, but I'll try folding it.

Your problem is at the connection of the ECM card edge and directscan connector. We have heard this exact problem many times and I'd say 99.955% of the time the problem is there. Check the top and bottom of the card edge for cleanlieness and be sure there is no gunk in the DS cable edge.

Other things to check in case:

-Parallel port setting, try setting to standard in the BIOS
-Running straight from DOS, not through a DOS Window

Tell us what brand and model laptop you have, it will help.

Good luck,
Bob

Ok, I went out to look at the laptop. It's an Ambra NOT Abriva like a said before. Sorry. Anyway, that's my problem. I brought the car over to Ron's and they pluged in theirs and everything worked fine. Where can I get this adapter that I need?
