Over the years I've seen pictures of TRs with black exhaust tips and assumed they were painted by the owner. Then, when I bought my car, there were small amounts of what appeared to be black paint on the exhaust. I've tried to find out if, in fact, the turbo cars came this way from the factory but still don't have a clear answer. Can someone please answer this once and for all?

I had what I was told was the stock exhaust on my 87 GN. They were stainless steal. HTH.

Go to the lounge and check out the thread "Pics of my 6600 mile Limited" Look at pics 8 & 19. They show black tips on a VERY low mile, all original Limited. This just adds to the confusion. Maybe they used both? I would really like to know.

Mine was black on my low mile GN and, if it's relevant, was also black on my SS Monte Carlo.

Hey Mike when I bought my car it had 9,000 on it and the tips where coated black, They still are to some extent starting to flake though

Damn, I guess they are black. Learn something new everyday, I guess.

My new 86 has Black tips. Personally, I liked the stainless tips better.

I bought my '86 GN new and it had black painted tips. The black paint extended up into the axle well so that all you could see from a side view was black.

I installed GM mudflaps so that rocks wouldn't kick up and chip the tips. When the factory exhaust gave up the ghost I had 2-chamber Flowmasters installed.

I'll check on a buddy's 4,800 mile "late build" '87 GN and see if his black paint is intact.

Stock exhausts were "aluminized". No stainless steel. Tips were painted black.

When I bought my low mile original GN it had traces of black on the tips too. I thought it looked horrible and yanked it off.

Every low mile original GN I've sold had the black tips, Mike. Seeing a trend here? ;)
