Mine came all metal with the little knock outs with the number to get a replacement from the dealer.

The VIN may work but if it's a door key you can get the number off the glove box lock and that will get you the door/trunk key.
 
Ok. Will open er up tomorrow and see what I see. Though I heard GM quits keeping this info after 10 years. So am I screwed as far as getting a new key cut with this code?
 
GM may not have the info but there's always a dealer that has it laying around.
 
Very possible. Try to find one that's been in business for a long time and hasn't changed hands.
 
When I worked for Carmax we used High-tech locksmiths. They dont need a code to cut a key. I use to pull tumblers out and give them to him and he would take it apart and look at the key sets and cut the key. Never had a lock he could not cut a key for.
