From the factory, the headers, crossover and downpipe were all plain unpolished 409 stainless steel. The downpipe flange that secured the downpipe to the elbow on the turbo was silver. The heatshields between the primaries of both headers were silver.
Here are a couple of pics of what they looked like brandy new. This NOS engine was only hot tested on propane in Flint, MI at GM's engine assembly plant. After 23+ years, there is some surface discoloration.
When re-finishing these parts, most folks send them to Jet-Hot and have the outside only coated in silver. I say the outside only as if the coating were to flake off over time as a result of heat and age of the metal and coating, the flakes of Jet Hot would damage the turbine wheel. You could opt for the downpipe to be coated inside and out.
