does a failing maf cause the car to stall?

Yes, it can. Test it by tapping the MAF with a screw driver handle while it's idling. See if it stalls.

if you need a known good GM original stock MAF please contact me. I upgraded to the 3.5 trans + and my original 87 MAF still works great.

thanks for the offer but I still have the original maf and it has a crack at the seam. Going to fix it if time allows and then drop that in and see how the car runs.
