I was mulling the idea of swapping my POS rebuilt 4 times 2004R for a 4L60 from a 93 Fbody or a 700R4 from a thirdgen.
The last three times its been rebuilt is for fairing between first and
second, the last shop suggested a shift kit now that he installed the shift kit (trans go) the car wont shift back down to first gear from overdrive I have to manually shift it to first gear at stop lights. (and it still flairs)
I know a few people have done 700R4 swaps and I'm wondering if a 4L60 won't hold up better.
Conversely does anyone know a reputable 2004R builder in the Detroit, Ohio, Indiana area?
As a last resort I'm contemplating buying a 200 from the local action autoparts, they have a partnumber listed for a GN and they offer a one year 15,000 mile warranty.. I'm sure I'll probably blow the crap outta it in short order but its 1k out the door.. still cheaper than a rebuild in my area.
Any one have any suggestions?
BTW the car is a TTA not a GN.

Your problem lies....

with the builder not the trans. The worst thing would be a trans-go kit. Having builder not fimilar with what needs to be done to these trannies is one of the biggest problems, just ask around here how many have spent thousands on rebuilds before they found the right builder for these. I think you would be a fool to replace it with something elsr you just need it done right and that will only have to be done once. Here is a quote from the #1 Guru of these trannies.

If you look closely you will find that most problems presented and or solved on here are that of a do it yourself or a builder who may be great with all other trans and not real familar with the 2004r. All of the best 2004r talent in the country are represented here.
Here is just a few off the top of my head....

Vince Janis.....Akron, Ohio
Eric Shertz.....Amityville L.I., N.Y.
Joe Burkhart....Manchester , CT.
Mike Kurtz.....Century Trans Houston Texas
Lonnie Diers.... Cincinatti, Ohio
Don Wang DRW Trans....Santee Ca.
Art Carr Trans.....Huntington Beach Ca.
Performance Transmissions "PTS" Sacramento Ca. (ME)

I would not hesistate
to take to any of them. :)

Good Luck

Lonnie & Vince are your closest and best bet. Here's a list of the basic's you need to make it live and both Lonnie and Vince have access to these.

NON billet and no pump basic mods that work well
