How much oil do I need to put in a Trane SER C3.8 28550 GH393-GG1-AB 0 3 ton compressor? My AC unit died and is working on eating my tax rebate check. I refused and picked up this trane compressor fairly cheap. My neighbor said he can charge it and everything, I just need to make sure I put the correct amount of oil in.

The original failure was because of my lack of maintenance on the thing. It went in twelve years ago and I haven't done anything to it since. Lesson learned...

Thanks for any input.

First of all, Where did you get the compressor from? The reason I ask is because they come with the oil in them. If it was used and known to be good it should also have the oil in it also unless it was dumped out. I would only change the oil in a used compressor if it had a failure in the system causing the oil to get burned up or some debris in it. If you still want the oil amount all you have to do is look up a Trane dealer in your local phone book and they will be able to look it up for you.

The *new* unit was used but, some did spill while we were removing it. I dumped the rest so I was sure nothing may have made it's way in there. All the old oil was clean and clear. Looked like water that had the viscosity of vegetable oil.

Thats good! All you have to do now is call any local H.V.A.C dealer and they will be able to tell you exactly what type oil and the amount to put back in.
