So, my brother gets this bug that he wants a Mustang Convertible, fox body style with the 5.0. He says its for his wife, I tell him to stick with the 2.3 4 banger - cars are cheap, good on gas, and not beat to death. But, he insists on the 8.

So, the next day he rushes out and buys one and then calls me about it.

Its an 89, 115K on the clock, shorty headers, MAF and air tubes are missing! He bought this from a dealer, Check engine light on, with an open throttle body, no air cleaner, etc. Actually runs good.... Except..... no oil pressure.
My brother, in his infinite wisdom, didnt happen to notice the oil pressure gauge that registers....nothing. Once its warm, a little lifter clack starts up. I put a manual gauge on it. Cold start, 24 lbs. at 2000 rpm, idle, 10. Hot, 2000 rpm about 15 lbs, idle - nothing. I explain to him he just paid $3500 for a piece of sh--. Nonetheless, his wife is already coming down on him.

He found a shortblock from a buddy for $75. I broke the block down last night.- its all still STD bore and crank, very little ridge (least I have ever seen) - all the bearings look good, no scoring or copper showing. Rings all free, pistons all look good. I believe I am just going to freshen it up with bearings, rings, and seals. Use the heads, intake, flywheel, etc, off the motor in the car and get him running that way.

Any pitfalls I need to worry about? I have never built a Ford block before, let alone one shoehorned into a mustang, and tips or tricks?

BTW, the bottom end of the short block I took apart had a stud kit and a girdle? He has a Moroso double sump pan on the car now, do those all play together nicely? Do I still need/use a windage tray with the girdle? SHould I throw away the girdle and get a ARP main bolt kit instead?

Thanks for the help?

Also, any way to tell what was done to the ECM? When I plugged in the MAF, the CEL went off and the car ran like sh--. Also, it doesnt have any O2 sensors either???? WTF did my kid brother buy?

On Mustangs, the MAF's are usually calibrated to injector size. Therefore when buying a new MAF, you'd have to specify the injector size first.

The ECM for a stick car should be (I think) A9L, & A9P for an automatic.

It's a good place to start....I just bought a five.slow within the past two months or so...The v8 engines are pretty plentiful around...I just saw a newly rebuilt one for about 600.00. The computers in the mustangs are actually adjusted to the transmission. If its an AOD (which I hope it isn't b/c its gonna blow eventually without a stiff rebuild) then it will have a certain ECM same thing for a t5....Geoff is correct the MAF must be calibrated to the tune of the injectors (19/24/30/42) whatever. A built 306 will run about 3000 installed. But parts are so cheap, it isn't impossible to find one w/low mileage for MUCH less than that.....
Ask him if the ashtray spring still works? Lil bit late now but well you know....
3500? thats a bit stiff for an 89 w/headers and missing everything. Here in Chicago, 3500 will get you a very nice example ;) I paid 300.00 for mine w/a smoked 3/4th gear (an AOD you know.)

Yes....

Use the windage tray also...can't help on the Moroso pan, but im sure it doesn't hurt.

Im currently putting my 406sbc in an 85 hatchback. Dunno much about ford motors but these cars hook like mad and weigh very little.

It should have oxygen sensors - 2 of them. One on each bank in the stock h-pipe which I'm sure is gone. A popular modification is to get rid of the 4 cats that came on the car by swapping out that H-pipe.

Pre-1989 was speed density so if you don't want to mess around with a MAF you may be able to make it work without one. Most people go the other way, though - convert the speed density to a MAF setup. That's what I did on my '88 ragtop. They're great little cars - especially the convertibles. As you've found, however, it's tough to find one that hasn't been all hacked up.

There are a few things that are throwing me off. First of all if it's an 89 model then it should have a maf setup. If it was running with just the throttle body open and nothing else then you have a speed density. ONLY the 86-88 5.0's V8 mustangs were speed density. If it is a true 1989 then someone swap the harness on the car for the much prefer mass air harness and maf setup or they just swapped out the mass air ecm and installed a speed density ecm. You would want to have a mass air setup due to the fact that you could modify the car in any way that you wish. As for the rebuild just a nice rebuilt will work perfect. I would go .30 on the bore, installed a double roller timing chain, high pressure oil pump, balance motor. It will be good for another 100,000 miles if the builder does a good job. You could even put in a small Motorsport cam that is if you have a mass air setup. It does need (2) 02 sensors whether it is mass air or speed density. Good Luck!! ;)
