I just re-installed my tranny after a fresh rebuild, all new clutches, cleaned the steels w/ the 3m pads, art carr servo, a/c band, a/c 3rd gear "blue plate", level 10 kit, everything was cleaned and reassembled, and while under the car I put on the PTS converter that I had put about 1/2 quart fluid in. Proceeded to fill tranny after having it bolted in. Added 4 quarts and started engine for a few seconds, then added 4 more and did the same thing. Once I got up to about 10 quarts total I looked underneath and saw a steady stream of fluid coming out what appeared to be the front main seal:mad: . I lifted the car back up and checked, it appears that the leak is coming out between the seal and the torque converter. When I pull the TV cable, the pressure goes up and the leak sprays the converter and splatters everywhere. It has a "clip" around the seal like the 700's have to keep it from coming out. Needless to say I'm going to have to pull the tranny out AGAIN . The guy that did the rebuild is going to bring over a different pump, and a few different seals. What else can I check!?
 
Here's a few of things to check:

  1. Converter Hub - Be sure that there aren't any sharp edges on the hub, especially around the rotor slots. They can slice the seal like a knife. Also, put some lube on the hub before inserting it into the seal.
  2. Seal - Be sure that you are using a high-quality, OEM seal like National. The cheap, offshore seals are trouble.
  3. Pump - Be sure to enlarge the front seal drainback holes in the pump castings.
  4. Dowell holes in case - Be sure that the dowell holes in your transmission case are still round and not egg-shaped. If they are worn, the transmission/converter centerline will not be aligned with the crankshaft centerline.

A 9x11 or a D5? ck pump- bushing real close.......
 
9x11. It had a new pump bushing, the old one was shot, perhaps the guy put in the wrong one?
 
Turns out the pump had been machined too far, and the pressure popped a tiny hole in it by the drainback. Now all I need to do is get an adjustible pin & I'll be set. Bruce, that 9x11 converter is worth the money! I love it! It sounds like a jet getting ready for takeoff at 3k rpm spooling the turbo up to 10 psi!:eek: :D
