I've just come across ANOTHER front cover that isn't right.
Last year's engine project had a bad one and this year's also. The two alignment tabs don't perfectly line up but that can be fixed by slightly filing the holes in the cover. The major screw up in the aftermarket covers in my opinion is that the crank isn't perfectly centered in the front seal.
The piece that's needed is a simple centering piece...perhaps made from 1/8th inch steel or aluminum that fits inside the outer lip of the front cover seal hole. In the center of this piece is a hole for the crank to go through. Kinda like a large silver dollar with a hole in it.
With this piece it would just be a matter of attempting to fit a bad cover, then using the centering piece to see what needs to be filed, sanded or ground on the front cover, then repeating the process until the crank is perfectly centered so the front seal will be perfectly centered around the crank.
