fuel gauge problem

My fuel gauge has always floated and the gauge disappears from half a tank to a quarter above half a tank. Well I replaced it with a gauge out of a regular regal and drove about 80miles on a full tank of gas and it is still berried beyond full. I put the old gauge back in and it doesn't work at all. Anyone have any Idea whats going on or come across a similar problem.

Punch the dash board.

Sounds stupid, but it always worked when this happened to my old GN. Sometimes it just takes a little mechanical agitation.

I have that same problem. My dash is digital and I founnd out the hard way about its accuracy. I was on the highway and the car started to sputter, I look at the fuel gauge and it says 3 gallons.
WRONG!! I end up barely getting over to the breakdown lane and a while later help arrives and gives me a few gallons of gas and I'm back in business. Turns out this guy has had a few of these cars and says the gauges are terribleand it is probably the sending unit that is the problem. Now I just subtract 3 from what my gauge says. My gauge also stays buried on F forever. I believe the unit is in the gas tank but I am not sure. I figure when I replace the fuel pump I will deal with it. Since you tried a couple of gauges, I would say that this is most likely your problem too.

The gauge will read still slightly full as well if you have a slight amount of resistance in the circuit. The racetronix Hotwire and fuel pump system has an internal ground to the fuel unit in the tank as well as a ground clip on the tank externally. This may help a bit. The ground wire on the outside top of the fuel housing is commonly corroded and rusty.
