well you dont need to pull the whole cluster just the tach boost module
the instructs should be on johns site
i personally never use the stock tach or boost , too hard to see and my tach was always off anyway by about 600 rpm and with alky due to the 3bar map sensor my stock boost gauge is now a 6-30 psi gauge but its useless as well for any accurate reading.
boost should be monitored on an aftermarket gauge , i like autometer 30/30 sport comp myself
you can add a tach using that connector ( the one with a female end)
for tach but unless your shifting yourself theres really no reason for one.
get a scanmaster and it has a tach mode on it if you want to check on your shiftpoints and trap rpm , you should have an SM anyway for knock and O2 monitoring.
i record my runs on the 87 with directscan so if the trans were not working correctly on the shifts I would know ,
on the 86 i record runs as well but have to shift 2-3 and 3-4 , I have a VDO 3" tach in the gnx style dash and it works good but even with that its easy to go 100-200 over on the shifts or even be just a bit early anticipating the delay in shift , in my case I would be better off with a shift light,
I plan on adding shift light tach like this one that a buddy is running

or this one

whats nice on these is the shift light is programamble without the pill modules so its easy to change.
