My 84 GN just crapped out down the road. The fuel pressure is at 20 psi when it started coughing. I could here the Walbro 340 Fuel Pump whining nicely and the pressure was at 40 psi, then the whine got lower and then nothing... If I let it sit for 3 mintues, it will work again for a short time (at least it did).. It's idling rough and the pressure is again at 20.. After sitting the pressure is up then down.. I have a good 6 gals of fuel in it..

I'm having the car towed to my house... but what should I look for to assure it's the fuel pump? No check engine light has come on.. it seems fuel related.

Is the pump in the tank? There appears to be a connector or relay of some type by the rear inner bumper on the drivers side... Any suggestions on testing??

THANKS!!!!

It got towed home. It started and is running in the driveway.. Seems OK... I'll let it run for a while to see what happens... Anyone had this happen to them?

Idles.....

I ran the car at idle for an hour... stayed at 40 PSI.. will try and drive it in the next days or so.. I shook all the wires looking for a loose connection, but nothing! It doesn't appear to have the hotwire kit.. hmmmm....

that's what i would recommend is check all connnections. And get a hot-wire setup or make one. It could be voltage drop in the stock wiring. That is why everyone run's hot-wire kits to begin with. What all was your running when the fuel pressure dropped? radio, headlights, heater, etc...

I ran about 5 miles in side road traffic and then opened it up on the highway to about 95 MPH (a quick 1 mile to my exit).. The I cruised at 45 till lights came up again.. after the 3rd light it started acting up. I just had the radio on..

I had no problems running all summer in the FL heat with a/c going..

What's the best way to hot wire the pump..Which ones off the Alt and which ones on the pump?

Cant say enough good things about the hotwire kit from racetronix. Very good kit. $50something I think it was.

Wasn't there some concern about the hotwire kits causing electrical problems?? i thought I saw that in a different thread.

Fuel pressure issues

Any chance the fuel sock on the pump is plugging up? At idle the fuel consumption is low so maybe it only happens under continuous higher flow rate.
Just a thought

Add more fuel to the tank! The tank is baffled and the fuel level may be low where the pump is. If your driveway has some slope to it, it may explain why it worked int he driveway.

You stand a chance of damaging the pump if you run it dry.

Running OK..?

I've driven it around town now (around 6 miles) and all is fine... I still have 6 gallons of gas in it..

I'm stumped, but will drive it some more tomorrow to test.. I'm wondering if maybe something did clog the intake?? I was thinking water ingestion, but it would have stayed pressurized, unless the sputtering led to the lower pressure... The classic "what came first" the chicken or egg.... sputtering or low pressure..

Thanks for all the input!

My fuel pump took 6 months to die. It had an intermitent problem at first. The car would randomly detonate and lean out. Then it died a couple times. Finally it would only idle and if I hit the gas it would die. Fuel pressure was still 40 psi at idle but if I hit the gas it went to nearly 0. It turned out to be my 5 year old Walbro 340.

The other thing I had go wrong is the rubber line between the fuel pump and hanger burst so the car ran ok at low load but wouldn't run at all once I got on the gas.
