i did this mod on my '98.... so i had to do it on the '89 also this mod allows you to "hide" your garage door opener instead of having to hang it on a visor or something like that. the opener is operated from a switch that you can place (or hide) anywhere on the car.
a previous owner installed some type of car alarm, he had a LED mounted on the dash so i removed the LED and used that existing hole. it's a good location for the purpose of the button - maybe not so good if you don't want to drill holes in your dash. in my '98 i have switches hidden in my ashtray.
this mod is pretty simple as far as parts go. but you will have to get a soldering iron and know how to use it. depending on your garage door opener - you may have to figure out what pins you need to use.
i have a craftsman door opener. the openers i have done this mod on have been similar - but slight changes over the years.
- open up the garage door opener case. you will need to find which pins are used to operate the opener. solder a length of wire (i used 22 guage wire) to each pin.

- solder or use quick disconnects to attach the other ends of the wires to the contacts on your switch. any momentary SPST should work. on my '98 i used a stock switch that was made for operating the convertable top. for the '89 i used a pushbutton switch from radio shack.

- complete wiring looks something like this. i added some quick disconnects (or you can use butt splices) towards the end by the opener. that way i can mount the switch in the dash, feed the wires down under the dash kickplate and hook them up to the opener.

- for the '89 i just put the opener under the driver side kick plate under the steering column.

- completed dash. you can see 2 buttons there.... the black one is the garage door opener, the red one is for the power antenna mod.
