Gas cap vented or non vented?!?

I have a strong fuel smell at gas cap. I checked the cap that was on the car when I bought it and it's a vented cap. Shouldn't this be a non vented cap since the fuel vent line runs to the charcoal canister in the engine bay? Or does the cap need to be vented as well?

It should be a non-vented cap.

But if somebody put a vented cap on it, it's likely the OE vent system is broken somewhere. You want to fix it. With the vented cap, gasoline fumes can collect inside the trunk and create a fantastic bomb. That's one of the reasons you don't see gas fill points at the back of the car anymore.
