You cnnot have a third party in the current system. The way the republicans and democrats have written the laws the government will not match campaign funds for a third party. It's their way of slowly ridding themselves of competition.

State governments are more inclined to have an independent or libertarian candidate elected cause there isn't much threat to the federal office. Look at Jesse Ventura his thinking and policies are sound, but the other parts of the government do not like him and have slowly made his life hell so he decided to quit.

One person cannot change the government. They'd like for you to think so, but it will never happen. People believe that since their ancestors paid the price of freedom that they do not have to. They criticize the president and his actions about going to war, but they will never volunteer to fight for the country themselves. I'm all for selecting a candidate to better the masses, but in my life so far the democrats have done nothing to help me nor my family.

If you make over $70K the democrats think you are in the upper middle class(approaching wealthy) and should be tax just like the rich. Gotta help out the poor  I know in my heart I will be able to protect and feed my family when the government finally collapses, maybe then the population's way of thinking will revert back to the individuals. Don't look for help from the government cause there is none. You have to do it on your own. In the older days if there wasn't any work or a way to support one's family they packed up and moved to find a better life. It doesn't happen anymore cause the democrats like to help them so much  When you lose your survival instincts you will become extinct, and I'll be there to laugh at you :D

onefastjackass

Good discussion on why the nothern crude isn't good for cars, but I didn't see it as a discussion of why it isn't good for America.

Not all crude goes to gasoline production. We are using increasing amounts of oil for electicity production. Remember, nuke is bad and coal is bad. Electric plants already are tasked with scrubbing high sulfer coal. They can handle the oil. Oil not used for power plants then stays in the market for cars. Net gain for all of us.

And I expect the next complaint is "only 5% of our needs." Well that one is easy. 3-4% cut in production by OPEC is the differenct between $1.50/1.60 at the pump and $1.90/200. And Alaska is only one place we are currently not allowed to drill.

On that gas prices before the elections thing, its been tried. In 2000 the party in power started pulling oil from the national reserve to bring down prices and it didn't make a dent. That same party has been demanding we do it again. I believe President Bush does have a good relationship with the Saudi government. Saudi went against OPEC and increased production last week.....prices at the pump came down. Would it have made you happier if they had waited until just prior to the election or have them do it now? I kind of liked it happening now.

And that incentive to buy SUV bit is getting pretty stale. They started allowing businesses to depreciate the cost of equipment at a faster rate. This included trucks, but was not only trucks. But where is there any tax incentive to buy an SUV? I don't own a business and there is zero depreciation for me. That goes for most other Americans. It does mean there will be more used SUVs on the market and maybe that will bring the prices down and I can afford a good one.

Then opec would just lower production again.

Well now Maybe this isn't off limits.

The biggest opposer to drilling more off the louisiana coast is his own flesh and blood JEB!

Once again I think both partys are messed up.But you really are blinded into thinking and believing only one lies and really believe that the other one is doing the correct thing.

Also youre point about the 40 cent jump is rediculous also if the gas companys wern't screwing you the jump would have only been 6-7 cents a gallon.

And on top of that you would not necessarily see any savings. It depends upon what they want to set the price at.

If a barrel is going for $35 and they decided to charge the same $35 you would see no price drop at all!!

So thinking that drilling is the answer to low gas prices is not necessarily true.

Remember the EPA and big oil comps have won. With the onerous EPA gasoline blends, regs, etc came the demise of smaller independent refineries. If any party were to drop some of the regs, or try to help with incentives to push for more refineries, they would be labeled as "brown". So ironically, these draconian regs have helped big business. There's just 3 oil comps now?
Hello media, are you out there, can you possibly report this story truthfully for once!

Then opec would just lower production again.

I am sorry to have to tell you, but that has been tried. President Reagan came in on the heals of OPEC giving us the ream job. His resonse was more American production. There were incentives to bring American oil fields back on line. World oil prices dropped.

We are the largest consumer of OPEC, but we are not the ONLY user of OPEC oil. They can't just keep boosting prices to respond to America without damage to the rest of the market. At some point they loose money because the market becomes depressed and sales fall.

Energy prices became very stable for America in the late 1980's to 1990s. The response to that was increased regulation on the energy industry. As we increased the regulations and costs on our energy producers, the rest of the world did not. Our oil companies became less profitable and less competitive. This made them targets for purchase by foreign companies. Instead of American companies buying them, they bought us. American/Standard is now British. Shell is now Dutch.

It gets even better. With the increased restrictions on building or expanding refining plants, now increasing amounts of gasoline base stocks are being imported instead of refined in America. The crude oil doesn't even make it here. The base stocks are shipped to local markets and blended there into what you see at the pump. All the costs and profits from refining are taken outside of our ability to tax.

Here you are complaining about imported oil and more and more the oil doesn't even come here. The complaints are going to shift to the cost of imported gasoline. Then the dog droppings will hit the fan.

I think most have missed the point if this thread. Opec isnt the answer nor is drilling for more crude. The problem is lack of refineries and every state has different blends. Our leader can make any laws he wants under the "national security" blanket. Why doent he make one blend for all states even if its the most stringent prolly california blend, and say thats what were going to refine nothing else. The price would deffinatly drop over time as any refinery could sell to any state. My main point was the higher ups arent going to change anything as there the ones making millions.

No party wants to be considered anti environment. Wait till diesel fuel is changed in accordance with Clintons' Tier-2 clean air rules. If the truckers strick, ill support them.

BTW-can anyone let me know just how many blends are required in Summer? Im trying to pen a local op-ed about this.
