Gas Tank Install - how to

I assume there isn't to much involved, but just incase, does anyone have a 'how to' on installing a new fuel tank. I picked one up the other day and am gonna throw it in the car. Just wondering if anyone has a link to a previous post.

When you go to put the straps back on, start with the side closer to the front. Get those bolts barely threaded then connect the other two. If you don't do that you will go nuts trying to get the straps to reach over the tank!

My method...lay on a pig piece of cardboard....put it on your chest....shimmy under the car (being on the cardboard makes it easier to shimmy...) with it on your chest and dance it around the straps...bunch press it up in there...fold legs under it and hold the tank up there while getting the straps in place and then install the hardware.

If you want to make it interesting....do it with a few gallons of gas still in the tank...:biggrin:

Fuel Pump Remove and Install


I don't remove the straps from the bolts by the bumper, just by the axle.
I also usually just lower the tank enough to pull the lines from the top of the tank as opposed to the write up above.

Do it empty... if it's empty it's nothing that you and a friend with a jack can't do... my impact gun with a 10in extension makes short work of the front bolts. Bye the way I have yet to do it without scratching my tank... maybe Im just careless or clumsy but I don't really care. If you're looking at the under side of my car you're in the wrong spot haha.

Seriously though get as much gas out of the tank as possible...

Ha, gas tank has a hole in it, which is why I'm replacing it...I was more concerned with the process of swapping the fuel pump from one tank to the other, and what types of sealants to use...if necessary.

No sealant needed....just use a new o-ring and coat it with vaseline so that when you're re-installing the clamp ring on the tank, it will slide into full lock position without too much stress or tearing up the o-ring...

Always a good idea to change the sock on the end of the pick up also....and you can even remove a flow restriction by taking the pump off it's mast and then cutting the smaller diameter end off the hard line that attaches to the other end of the high pressure fuel hose running between the hard line and the fuel pump....replace that length of hose with properly rated hose too...

If you're due for a pump change....just replace your pump with a Reds XP.

this is what i had to do last fall when my pump puked. i had to do it in a parking lot with a floor jack.... and 3/4 tank of fuel. ended up ditching the jack for re-installation.

needless to say, i DO NOT recommend doing this with fuel in the tank.. not a situation i'd like to re-experience any time soon.

Hey Thanks guys, shouldn't be an issue with the gas, it leaked all over the garage floor years ago....

Borrow or buy a set of ramps made everything so much easier. I was able to get under the car and put the tank back in using my legs to prop up the tank while I got the straps hooked back on. Good time to replace the rubber strap insolators around the tank.

I agree on the ramps! It's not a bad job when you have some room to work and perhaps a trans jack to help hold the tank in place while you secure it.

I would only add that the fuel line that goes inside the gas tank is supposed to be rated for being submersable. SAE 30R10

when i put in my reds pump i did it with half tank of fuel and a jack with a6x6 on it!
