is attendance down at the nats the last few years? i went to the nationals from 87thru94 - had some great times - bg has a warm spot in my heart and despite all the problems i would hate to see it changed again- is it really that bad now? i may go again this year, hopefully its not that bad-

Jim,

You've really put me on the spot now.

1) Not being an insider I don't know the reasons why certain decisions were made. I don't understand why the Nats dates were changed. Why the once hot web site was allowed to decline into insignificance. Why Friday racing was dropped then reinstated. Why, after more than 20 years, they're making nats decisions so late that they have to extend the registration deadline. I don't know why for several years the event T-shirt had a 70 GS with the wrong grille on it. I'm just as puzzled as some others are. I think they should communicate better through the newsletter and the web site.

2) As far as their site being and not being the official voice of the GSCA: It's apparently supported by GSCA funds but run by Bennett Jones. Richard doesn't go there but the event schedule, rules, registration form, etc. are on there. You can post a club or nats question there but they may have to ask someone else or you might have to call someone. They have email for the nats people but not for any of the club people. I think it should be the official voice of the the GSCA and should promote the heck out of the club and nats.

3) The discussion in this thread has been very civil and to the point but you can tell that some are still very angry. When people on either side get angry they get defensive and the fur starts to fly. More than 20 years ago when I was a mechanic I asked the shop manager why we used expensive supertanium bolts instead of factory grade. He said we save more on insurance than the price difference of the bolts. Honest question and straight answer. I learned not to assume that I knew more than the people making the decision. Not that people don't make wrong decisions buy I should find out the reasons first.

We should be able to pose the same questions and get answers from the GSCA. That doesn't mean we'll always like or agree with it. I believe that the majority of attendees would rather go to BG than Columbus or anywhere else. The guys that would rather go to Columbus won't be happy with that.

It was not my intent to use this thread to effect changes in the GSCA or nats, simply to find out what the issues are. I do think I will be asking more questions and offering more input. One thing to keep in mind is that despite what may be some problems the GSCA and nats continue to be very successful and not just financially. A little tweaking can go a long way.

4) The I/C test. It's one of my pet peeves when I see an article promised for the next issue does not appear. Sometimes they are unavoidably delayed and sometimes they never appear. Bugs me too.

To Grant:

This may be a function of age. To us old timers it's all about the engine not the body. That's why we'll accept a Buick powered anything but won't accept a Buick with anything other than a Buick motor. I saw a nice older Buick at a car show a couple of weeks ago. When I saw it had a big block Chevy I walked on by saying what a waste. The biggest story of the GSCA since it started is Hemi vs Stage 1, not Roadrunner vs GS. It's motor vs motor. To understand the passion you might want to read some of the letters from when the 50 fastest article came out.

Everyone likes to see Tweaked II run. Heck if John Force wants to make a pass we'd like to see that. But when we invite Corvettes for match races it's just to beat up on them on the track not to admire their engines. Frankly, I've never understood why anyone would want to put a Chevy in a Buick let alone run it at the Nats. All we do for 5 days is talk about our engines. What would a guy with a Chevy powered Regal talk about? Parts that don't fit anybody else's engine? It's like Rush Limbaugh at a NOW convention. I just don't get it but heck I'm old.

To Paul:

In the early days we welcomed all the locals to come in so we'd have somebody else to race. There weren't many takers. I love all musclecars so wouldn't mind seeing them run as long as the GSCA guys can get all the runs they need. There is usually one night where the track runs its regular program and the GSCA guys will hang over and run em. Wish you could make it at least once. You'd enjoy it.

To sr71gn:

Come on down you'll have a great time. I don't want to minimize the issues that affect some people but if you want to see great racing and cars and meet great people this is the place to be.

To everyone else:

If you have never been to the nats and are interested in going I recommend you check out my web site. The nats is only place you can go to see hundreds of Buicks racing for 5 days and show cars that will blow your mind. The pictures on the site don't do it justice. The people you'll meet there are just great folks.

first off i thank you for the speedy response, and in a kind debat manner i will explain my side, why would you want to see a chevy powered grand naional, simple answer is technology, there is more to racing tahn engines, you can't go fast without a car around it to put the power to the ground, all of the chassis work to include the backhalf, cage, component mounting and interior is 100percent transferable to any other ttype car, the only difference is engine mounts and the number of cylinders, also there are alot of twin turbo chevys with mine included, running the same fuel injection, ignition, turbos, transmission, injectors, throttle body and so on, so there is alot of parts that are interchangeable, i do agree with you on the engine wars, but i am not bringing a corvett with a chevy engine, besides an engine, what do a mustang and a Gn share, not a whole lot, and talk to anyone that has built a big tire car and they will tell you that the engine is the easy part, the core reason why me and many others run a chevy powerplant is money, i am 23 and still getting my life underway, and the 3,500 dollar ta block or 2,000 dollar stage block plus associated parts are kinda out of my league, especially when i can spend 3,500 for a whole long block that will make 1,000 hp, but my local buick club i do not have money like john force or conley, so the nats will not be on my race weekend list, but i will still go and watch the other guys have fun. i am not flaming, jsut stating my point, rare as it may be in the buick circle, but if another low 8 second car is not interesting, ok, there are plenty of 13 and 12 second cars to keep you entertained.

My 2 cents

Very informative, and many of the same views I have so I'll try not to rehash too much. I too, was a member and attended several Nationals at BG. It was a very enjoyable experience. As I got older, had children and a family life the realization became that I couldn't attend due to the date(school still in session). The one thing that stands out most for me is that the news letter went from no(And never will have) advertisments to a manufacturer flyer for whoever supportted the "Club" the best. At least this is what I saw. Like others pointed out I can get most if not all that info from here and other sites like this right now or any time I desire for the cost of the computer and an isp(something that I'm going to pay one way or another as the kids "need" it(Ya right)). This ended my need to send $35 a year to the "club". I've never looked back. Thanks for the venue.

Rich

Hi Lance - been a GSCA member on and off from '93-99- and attended 7 or 8 nats over the years. Currently a member of the NE-GSCA regional club and the BPG and will probably not join the GSCA again. Honestly....the $35 is pocket change and has nothing to do with it

I tend to think of the GSCA and the Nats as seperate entities that collide once a year

Pro's
--------
1) biggest baddest Buick event on the planet
2) gave all uf *us* buick nuts a place to meet each other
3) ???? I honestly cant think of any

Con's
--------
1) It parades as a club. This single issue has so many levels that i cant begin to cover them all. $35/year x 5,000 members x ??years?? = ALOT !!!! a true club would have to be accountable to where and how this money was spent
2) up until this year, the dictator'ish attitude
3) In todays age of internet access the news letter is a stagnant attempt of information exchange. One to many. boards like this and V8Buick.com and even the GSCA site permit INSTANT, many to many communications.
4) no interaction between regional chapters from the top
5)Bennett
6)Richard not available on the Net
7) Not being able to participate at the Nats if Not a member

So....what does $35 buy me ? a New letter which is nice but practically unimportant in the day of the internet and....??? Permission to participate in the nationals. IReally.....what else ??? Developement or Repro parts ??? Sponsership of regional events ??

Is the Nats a Profit generating event ....break-even, or does the GSCA subsidise it ?? We'll never know, but I find it hard to believe it doesn't generate a LOT ....A LOT !! of money. Track prep - dont they hold national NHRA events there ?? That issue....for so many years is, plain and simple - is pathetic

Just some points......as I see them

See you in BG in a few weeks....Yes Im going as a spectator as it IS the biggest buick gathering ......for now

My final thoughts (I hope),

I'd like to thank everyone for their input, both pro and con. I think the thread has run its course. Hopefully anyone thinking about joining the GSCA or attending the nats got enough information to make a sound decision. I believe the GSCA has a money back guarantee so if you don't like the newsletter you're not out anything. The nats don't need a guarantee.

It should be no secret what my opinions are. I love to tell folks about the benefits of the GSCA and how great the Nats are. My web site promotes both and is a labor of love. I'm sorry to hear when anyone has had what they feel is a bad experience with the club or the event. I enjoy reading the newsletter and I live for the nationals. I've managed to schedule one childbirth (May 14) and one wedding (May 12) (not the same year) around the blessed Buick event and my trips to BG have outlasted one wife. (I got the better end of the deal.) Only family disasters have kept me from two of the nats.

There's room for improvement but I know there are good people at the GSCA working to make things better. The GSCA has over 4000 members because it is a good organization. The nats will draw hundreds of cars and thousands of people because it's a great event. Will everything run perfectly? No. Will I have a great time? Certainly. If the GSCA or nats never changed, I'd still be a happy camper.

For those of you going to BG, I'll see you in a couple of weeks. For those of you who can't make it, look for nats photos on my site beginning Wed the 14th. For those of you that don't like the GSCA or the nats, good luck with your car and I hope you have a chance to enjoy one of the other Buick events.

Thanks

I have been a lurker here for awhile but listen for a sec. I have been a GSCA member since 1981 and I have been to BG with the exception of 2 years every year since 1983. I have a blast why because I try not to let it get to me ....to much. However my beef is and always been BENNETT that guy has made my life miserable to the point I was thinking of never returning to the NATS again. JC has taken the reines so it should be better.

MY big beef last year was that I was asking for a spray of the track to the 330 lights and what did we get?? Thats right they sprayed only to the tree what 20 feet total!!???? The track prep has sucked for the last several years...... I have a low 10 second 10 inch tire car and its ready to get my first 9 out of it @4000 lbs too:eek:

I even told them pink hat dudes that I would PAY to get it done!! but would they NO!! that pissed me off and I have video sliding around the track thru the finish lights it was only obvious we needed more VHT father down the track.
I have every run of s16BB on tape at the starting line and they are all going 20 feet then the sliding starts!! WHat a joke!

I sure hope the traction is better now I have 825 Dynoed HP in it now so I am now ready to post a 9 on the boards this year.
Oh yea I have lost 20 lbs myself too!!;)

Lance,

Thanks again for taking on this thread.

Mike makes a good point about traction and Mike best of luck this year hope you get your 9.

I know in talking to Jim Haas who read in National Dragster about an event at BG either right after the Nats or a few weeks after that, another big event was held there and guys were raving about how great the traction was and how consistant guys were hooking and running.

Leads you to believe the track can be prepped more or better and Mike's point about sliding around proves that the members deserve to have a properly prepped track for all racers.

Who makes that decision on prep.....guess you'll have to ask one of the formed committees to get with Dallas and ask him.

Good luck and safe travels to all going.

I would like to offer my 2 cents on this issue...

I agree with the whole safety issue, but I would like to think that I take a different look at it: If someone wants to put a roll cage in their car because they think it makes it safer, they can go right ahead. If someone elects not to install one into their very nice 10-second screamer, then I think they should be allowed to run as well. Having a roll bar does not make that car any safer for anyone else other than the driver.

Lets face it folks, we have people out there installing roll cages in cars that don't know the first thing about crash dynamics. In many instances, a roll cage can actually cause more harm than good during certain crash situations. Why do you think newer cars are designed to "wad" up? I understand the purpose for a roll bar, but how many cars have you actually seen roll on a dragstrip? Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that it can't or won't happen, but we all have a far greater chance of getting killed on the way to BG then getting killed making a couple of passes down the strip once we get there, and it is a risk I and so many others are willing to take. In short, lets leave the roll cage issue as it is and focus on other safety issues like how people do their burnouts and how clean-up is handled after a vehicle failure at the start line.

About the fees: Hey, I understand that it costs money to put these things on and staff certain posts, but I think a lot of us would like to see a better return on our money.

Case in point: Saturday 2003 -- it was raining and there was no GSCA presence at the reg tent outside of the gate, but there were track employees there to collect your admission fees. Was this done on purpose because they didn't want to answer questions about saturday's program, or was it coincidence? You decide. For my $35 club dues + reg fees, event fees, and admission charges, I think the GSCA needs a presence at the gate every day the event is going on. I don't like this BS of pay us here and then find the tent inside and talk to so in so about getting reimbursed for your GSCA member spectator discount.

Daily programs would be a nice addition to collect at the gate to let us know what is going on that day, at what time, and where you are supposed to go. Its nice that the GSCA newsletter is supposed to have a summary of this info, but things change (like they did this year) and when you are busy getting your car ready or setting up for the car show you don't have time to walk over to a speaker so you can try to hear and understand what is going on. You can't tell me that it is too expensive for someone to have a laptop and a printer and make daily programs noting changes to the schedule, sit at the gate and hand them out, every day.

I am also with a lot of you when it comes to having a difference of opinion about the GSCA or the NATs in general. It seems as tho anytime one of us voices a concern or disagreement about the aforementioned, there are a select few that are quick to punce on us. I think it is time for those said people to grow up and realize that we all would like the NATs to improve to better serve the buick community. I complain when I see something wrong or when I see something that could easily be improved. I believe others do the same. There will always be those who can never be appeased or made happy with the NATs, but I am not one of them. I actually enjoyed Friday very much. Of course, this is just my opinion and if you don't like it, too bad.

Darth;

I liked friday to the best also!! I made it to the semi's in super 16 BB to only cut a .607 lite so I was beaten by .017  That really sucked cause it was all me this time !!!

gsca nats,

i thought the track could have been better, i went 1.39 60 ft the best all week, i have went faster at local track, i couldnt launch with more than 10 lbs boost, tried different tires didnt help, as far as safety goes, i dont care if a 8 sec, car dont have a rollbar. not my life, i ride my harley without a helmet its my life, i drive my tow truck and farm truck i hardly ever wear a seat belt. i ride horses without a helmet, and im 63 years old, the nats i love to go , talk to a lot of people . learn a lot, i have met a lot of nice people there and a few a-holes, it cost a little money to go racing, enter fee for car and driver crew cost 234.00 motel 400.00 food? gas for race car 56.00 golf cart rental 175.00. this year my trans and torque conv, got wasted there goes about 1000. to repair, as for richard i thought his red headed girl friend was ugly. looked liked a dog. we will go to the nats, as long as they have them. when you get my age you may not be alive to see next years nats. this does not mean i like they they run the races. thanks for letting me post.

my 2 cents worth about the nats:

1. drop tuesday from the program to save costs
2. don't bend people over for not pre-registering. i know 2 cars
that stayed in louisville this year because they did not want
to pay the outrageous late entry fees. cars that show up w/o
a membership are new members. be glad to have them.
3. have a place designated for club members to park their buicks
instead of out in the parking lot with everyone else. have an
area where all buicks park and people can wander thru and
check them out. clubmembers who do not pay to race should
not have to park out with the spectators. they are still
clubmembers.
4. move it back to june so people will not have to decide between
norwalk the first week of may, or the nats the third week.
this would distance it from these events.
5. i have lived in ky for 30 yrs. and it always, always rains in may
6. burnout contest
7. dyno challenge
8. have a gn / gs challenge instead of the car show challenge.
gs vs. gn for friday night would be cool. running the super 16
friday night under the lights was cool also.
9. the car show ends too early.

i have been the last 4 years and it is getting much smaller. i will keep on going regardless, and i hate to see it cancelled.

torque tech

"They entered into the GSXtra also, with the 1-2 page article calling Torque Technologies by the name "Dorque Tech" and claiming their cams were ripoffs of the club cams and made pulls on the armchair dyno. What a waste of my time to read this crap for months."

this is why I quit the GSCA, this is all I remember Richard doing, month after month... Ands yes I have Torque tech 3'inch exhaust and they have been on there for 9 years now...still look like new!!!!
