GN PROB FINALL FIXED! U'll wanna read this!

AS some of you will remember ... I had an 87 GN, bone stock, that would occasionally need to be towed home.

You all helped me attempt to fix this problem on my own, but when it wouldn't run period.... I took it to a GN mechanic.

Jus thought you'd all like to know ... turns out it was the EGR solenoid!

Car runs fine all the time now .... keep it in mind, since it didn't throw a code! Apparently, if you slide your hand UNDER the EGR valve and have someone brake torque the car you can feel if the valve moves up. If it doesnt, chances are the egr solenoid is bad. Cheap part.

Easier way to test it.

With the car at idle, disconnect the hose from the EGR to the solenoid at the EGR. Place a long clean hose the EGR and suck on it. The car will try to die if the solenoid is working. It doesn't take much vaccum (sucking).

To test the EGR, I just reach underneath it and apply a small pressure to the diaphragm. If the car tries to die, then the EGR is functioning properly. HTH

Am I reading this right, your car would NOT run because of a problem with the EGR? It should run even without an EGR.

What was the car doing when it acted up?
I don't understand how a bad EGR solenoid would require
a tow truck
Was it keeping the EGR valve open all the time?

Add me to the list of those confused by this mechanic's diagnosis.
Didn't realize that a faulty EGR could kill a car. Maybe you can convince him to tell you what the actual EGR malfunction was.

Devil Car While your method will test for clogged passages, it doesn't test the solenoid at all because you're manually lifting the diaphram. You need to lift it with a source of vacuum as Dan was pointing out.

That diagnosis seems suspect to me. If it didn't run at all, I do not think it could be the EGR. I am sure that the EGR doesn't even come into play at idle. My 2 cents worth.

Well, if the egr solenoid allowed vacume to pass through to the valve assembly all the time, instead of when the ecm commands it to, then the car would prolly not want to run much. My car won't wanna run if I hold the egr valve open at idle.

Possible I guess. But I've never heard of that failure mode. Just when I thought I'd heard it all. Seems nothing surprises me much anymore.

is it an autozone part or is it a dealer only part?

EGR sticking open is a pretty common failure mode and will kill the car. A car can operate without an EGR if you block it off so that it does not allow for the exhaust to come back into the manifold but stuck open it sucks all it can from the exhaust. I've seen this on 3 different vehicles.

If the EGR is stuck the car can still be driven. It will run like Pinto and want to stall everywhere but can still be driven.

bb87 is right...however if it does die...which is usually at a major intersection...it will feel like it floods out and takes an eternity to start if it ever does.
