What do you mean "That is it" ? The old casting, once ported, have a tendency to crack somewhere on the intake runner/near the water jacket? (honestly that is a complete guess but not sure what else you could mean)

The early heads had guide problems as well...

Some were improper stem clearance...others were the guides not staying in the heads...saw some of both issues.
