I'm sure you've heard all the pathetic excuses...marriage, kids, career!! Well, my 87 GN has been parked and sitting in the garage for about 5 years after hearing a loud pop and then top end rattle. Turns out it had a broken rocker arm shaft. The pair was replaced w/push rods and plastic inserts. The car is stock for the most part and has 67k miles on it. Injectors and chip are stock, Flowmaster exhaust by original owner...when the cam went it was replaced w/a Lunati 200/200 which has about 3-4k miles on it.
It started at the touch of the key the 2-3 times I turned it over when she was broke. Recently, I syphoned fuel out of it, drained the oil, coolant and added new fluids. It starts right up w/no knock at all but does have some light gray exhaust smoke. It's not extreme but it also has that burned exhaust smell that stays w/ ya!! It surges at times while idling but doesn’t stall. Popped two of the plugs and they were nasty black.
I planned on new wires, plugs(NGK), pcv, O2 sensor, MAF, fuel filter, cleaning the intercooler, and installing the Scanmaster 2.1 that my awesome wife bought me for Christmas. I also want to check the stock turbo…I guess check for oil in the downpipe and play in the shaft? And pop the valve covers back off to peak at the valvetrain in motion. Probably should add a passenger side valve cover breather while I’m at it, huh?
Planned on a TT chip, new injectors, upgrade fuel pump once I get the smoking issue resolved. What are the chances that the smoke will subside after running for awhile, and is there anything else I can do to try to correct it? Too rich? Turbo problem? Cam issue? Is there any other precautions or things to look for since it’s been sitting? Are the Scanmaster readings going to be that helpful? I don’t want major failure from running it w/the smoke. Feel guilty enough it’s been sitting neglected…don’t want to make things worse! Guess I’ll shut up and get to work!!
 
I'd suggest either clean the current set of injs, or do the upgrade.
Sooty plugs could be an indication of poor inj performance.. [Especially, since they've been sitting for 5 yrs.]
 
I would change the chip and clean the injectors or change them out for sure.

I wouldn't change any other parts, excepting perhaps the plugs and inspect the wires, unless I could verify they were bad.

The new Scantool use should help with that. :smile:
 
New Fuel Filter is a good idea. read the Spring Cleaning at Turbo Regal Web Site for a few tips. Also if the oil pressure doesnt come up instantly you may need to prime it. few ways to do it.
 
Thanx for the help. Gonna go w/basics and get the Scanmaster hooked up.

Did see a TT chip and 42# set for $289 on Full Throttle...is that my best bet?
 
Yeah the TT chip and injectors will help, then you room to grow into them (i.e turbo, more boost..............)
 
yep...get the 60's. They idle better and you'll have growing room. (Famous Buick last words....."If I can just run an 11.99999 I'll be happy with it"....:rolleyes:

If you are replacing the fuel pump a GOOD cleaning of your fuel tank and lines is cheap insurance. I have one that sat up for about 7 years and did the following with no problems.

1) Remove the tank (you'll do this to install the pump anyway)

2) Disconnect the fuel lines ant the rail and remove the fuel filter.

3) Use brake cleaner to clean the lines. Have someone at the rear of the car to watch for the brake cleaner to begin clearing up as it comes out. You will have three lines to do this to....an air hose will help here if you have it. If not...no biggie.

a) return to tank
b)tank to filter
c)filter to rail

4) Do the following (twice if neccesary).. This takes two people, and one or two gallons of denatured alcohol...depending on how gummed up that old fuel is.

5) Take a garden hose and run a gallon or two of water in the tank. Both of you grab an end of the tank and shake the sh!t out of it. Dump it out and repeat until the water coming out is relatively clean.

6) Pour a gallon of the denatured alcohol in the tank and shake, shake, shake. This will remove all the shelaqued(sp?) brown and orange crap that stuck to the baffles.

7) Repeat until its clean.

No need to put a chain or other crap in the tank to remove gunk. I STRONGLY suggest making SURE you have a clean fuel system. This will add an hour... tops ...to a inj/pump upgrade. There again, cheap insurance.
