ive been to the track a few times this year but all 1/8th mile, i am going to Bowling Green 1/4 mile this weekend for some test n tune...first time at track really with scanmaster so i can actually tune a little while there. I have the TT adjustable chip, adjustable fuel regulator, stock turbo, downpipe, 50# injectors, walbro fuel pump with direct wire...and all else is stock i believe.

i will have 110 fuel in it, boost probably on 19-20 to start. All my scanmaster readings for chip is on default, my wot fuel, only adjustment i have made is i bumped timing up 3 degrees in 1st and 2cnd and it seemed to help a bunch seat of the pants and 60ft....my fuel pressure is on 44 with vac off running.

so what are the basics here? how do i know which way to go with timing? fuel? what is a general rule of tuning? since i have 110 octane and i have cranked the boost up do i need more timing all thru wot? do i need to add fuel% also all way thru? or just first and second? or top end?

i have ran some 8.20's in 1/8 before tuning on 18lbs of boost with 110 and et streets...so im hoping for some 7's 1/8 then whatever that equates to in 1/4.

so any "general tuning" parameters i should start with? is it like old school kinda tuning, you put good gas in, can run more timing, and add fuel pressure? or is it totally different with these turbo cars?

I'm not an expert...and I've yet to get my GN to the track...but what I've been told is that as long as you're not getting any knock, and your O2s are in a the safe range 780-820) you should keep your fuel pressure fixed and actually pull fuel out through you chip a little at a time to get more power. Then watch your 60fts to decide how to launch differently and mph at the traps to determine if your fuel adjustments are helping.

Once you run out of gains related to adding or pulling fuel, then start to see what you can gain by adding or pulling timing again...watch the MPH at the traps to decide what to do next.

It's a finess thing...

It's best to keep an eye on things with a Direct Scan or Powerlogger set-up and use the ScanMaster only for reference.

First run just get a baseline on how the car is running. If your O2's are good and you dont get knock retard. Turn the boost up a couple psi and repeat.

Watch your O2s closely in third gear, that's where mine usually leans out. I usually run C16, so I dont know how far you can go with 110 octane. Any sign of knock, just lift. False knock usually occurs for me a second or two after the 1-2 and 2-3 shift as the first or second light on my knock gauge, or 1.0 to 3.0 on the scanmaster.

Use your chip to adjust the fuel, I wouldn't mess with the adjustable regulator. Make sure to take the instructions, lol.

I don't know how far you will push the stock turbo, once you don't want to go any higher (25-26 psi on 110 ???) then I would play with timing.

On 93 octane I run 20* timing in 1/2 and 18* in 3rd and 4th gear. With 116 in the tank I run 24* in 1st and 2nd and 26 in 3rd and 4th. 22/23 in 1st and 2nd, 24/25 in 3rd and 4th might work for you with 110, just have to play with it and see.

Good luck and have fun!

Take care,
John

X2. Most people seem to get more gain from adding boost than timing but watch out with the stock turbo. Turn the boost up too high and the heat created will actually take away power and can cause knock.

This all of course assumes you're already at the boost level you desire...so the above is for a given boost level.

ive been playing with it tonight a little before tomorrow loading it on the trailer....as im taking baby andwife with me so dont want to drive over an hour one way and tear something up...so no wise cracks from the trailer queen crowd lol.

ive got 110 in it now, had boost at 19ish, turned timing up across the board 3 degrees, turned fuel up 10% across the board with the chip, Eric actually gave me this baseline starting point since it is his chip :) and im getting a little knock in 3rd gear...about 4-5 so not good, but i had some 93 octane mixed in there for a bit. so if im going to turn boost up i probably need to back off my timing in high gear eh? or more fuel, but its already feeling like its not pulling that hard in top gear maybe its too fat already at 10%....but still knocking. well see tomorrow at track once i get all 110 in there and get my knock back down. oh by the way i put in a new 02 sensor and walla my mv or around 800+ now...thank goodness. i was gettin worried seeing 390ish all the time....

sleeeeepy....

well best run of night was o.k. but here it is....

1.79 60ft.
8.04 1/8th
85.23 mph
12.71 1/4 mile
104.90 mph

22lbs. boost....critique away.
oh and zero knock..

Nice looking car. Your car looked good going down the track. I was surprised that it didn't ET quicker than it did, of course it was still warm out last night. Hopefully cooler weather and quicker times are coming soon.

The top end mph seems low given your 1/8th mph. Did you leave it in 3rd gear or did it shift to 4th? Most 12.7 TR's I've seen trap 106 and higher.

that pass i left it in 4th and just drove it. i am just learning to tune, so i was working with timing and fuel % every pass, it is actually running a little fat, and i need to take some fuel out of it on top end and i think it would mph where it should, but im learning and i'll get there, its my best pass to date so i was happy with it for now. can't complain in three passes i tuned 5 tenths out of it so im getting there....it was good to see all the turbo regals there last night. on my fourth pass the track was slippery and dew had set in and i started getting knock so i just let out of it and called it a night....had my wife and baby girl there so all in all it was a good night and had fun.:p

Get the 60 foot down a little more and your in the 7's in the 1/8th. If your using slicks I would take the front sway bar off while at the track. That will knock a tenth off the 60 foot. What did your 02's look like?

my 02's looked good they were up in the 800's on 110 fuel. i put a new 02 sensor in and that fixed that problem. and yes i did fix my boost problem, it was fixed all along, i just didn't turn the rod in far enough, i fixed my vacuum leaks inturn made it lower boost that before... so all i good. i may take it to a 1/8th mile track this friday and see if i can get it into the 7's...im dying for a 7 sec pass :) then i will probably leave it alone for the year. got a new house and baby on the way so will be busy! i took it out last night and here is what i got....see what you all think on which way i should go to get my 7 sec pass, which it may be as simple as just driving it better off the line really, and cooler air.

boost @ 22 1/2 lbs but when first taking off spikes to like 24ish then settles back to 22 1/2 lbs...
fuel is set on 44lbs with vacuum line off, with the tt chip i have the fuel at 7.8% fat across the board 1st-4th.
1st/scnd timing is at 28deg
3rd/4th timing is at 22deg
my 02's are staying above 700-800 full throttle with 0.2 knock on last nights play run...

suggestions guys? or just learning curve on launching...:D

dumping exhaust? i have to drive it to the track friday...i dont have the exhaust dump on my car no. id rather not...i have thought about taking my front swaybar off though.
