i've got a turbo 3.8 out of a monte carlo. can anyone tell me what it's rated at for hp and tq stock? also what can be done with them? thanks

What year turbo motor? Hot air's or 84/85's are RATED at 200hp/300torque.
86/87's are 235hp/335torque(i think).
But the possibities are endless with these things.

1980 or 08

Your turbo monte is either an 1980 or 1981 carburated 3.8 turbo. You have a rochester 4 bbl carb that sits ontop of a plenum that the turbo plugs into. A very close friend of mine, not knowing anything about the car, took that exact motor out of the car (bad rods) and swapped it for a 454. he scrapped the turbo motor, carb and all that attachments except for the turbo, which still sits in his bedroom on a shelf. Your car was rated at 175 to 180 factory BHP, and about 210ft/lbs of torque. They were a nice motor and a buick product at that. not many exist anymore, and if you have the whole car, keep it in good shape. A turbo monte on ebay with a knocking engine sold for 4500, and it needed a paint job bad. Good luck.

i've got just the engine. i'm puting it in a 85 C10 with a bad 4.3. any advice for my swap? right now i'm going to put all new lines on it, rebuild the carb, new oil pump, pan gasket, front and rear main, timing gasket, and all the tune up stuff. any advice for a turbo rookie?

oh yeah it's an 80

What about valve springs and timing chain...........I always see peps say to do them!! You trying to just get her running in stock form. Could port 'N' polish heads and intake. Sounds like a cool project man.

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/recipes/carb.html , ENJOY!

Also, post on the "Before Black (Non SFI) Tech" forum. Those are the carbed turbo motor guys, and will have much more info and suggestions.

P.S. I wouldnt expect alot of performance. Those engines were the start of something great, but the performance wasnt really there yet. Granted, for the time (70's/early 80's), the carb turbo engines put out about the same HP as the V8s of the time.........but thats not really saying much:( . Depends on how fast your trying to go, but if your trying to really get moving, hate for you to just wind up pissed and feeling like you wasted your time.
They are good engines, and if kept up should make a good daily driver. My brother sold an 80,000 original mile '78 sportcoupe (carbed turbo regal) earlier this year. Its making for a good daily driver, but as we had to explain to the guy who bought it. Its by no means the same as the TRs of the later years, or even capable of what they can do for that matter. Should become a good collector's item at some point in time though.
Just my 2cents. Good luck.

i just hope it will have a lil something extra. the fastest thing i've owned was a old 3/4 ton ford with a weak 351. and it will get me learning about turbo motors. maybe for a future swap of a fuel injected motor... or a converson
