I removed the govenor in my 200R in order to lighten the small weight and get the trans to shift later. While handling the govenor, the check balls fell out. I put them back in with no problem. My question is, is it normal for the check balls to have ability to fall out of the completly assembled govenor while handling? Do I need to bend the metal tang tighter down on them to keep them in? Also, this govenor has a light spring on the larger weight, and a heavier spring on the small weight. Does this sound correct? Thanks in advance for and help in this matter. John Dirks, Severna Park Maryland.

Ok no answer yet but im still hoping. Ive been looking at this govenor and have figured that maybe its ok this way. Im thinkin that when its in my hands and i push the weight all the way over, the gap is large enough for the check ball to fall out. Now, im assuming that when its installed in the trans, the springs holds the check balls against the seats. As the govenor spins, the weights have centrifigul force that throws the weight and allows the ball to come off the seat. But, the weight does not swing out all the way such as it does when i push it over with my fingrer (with govenor removed and in hand). So, when the ball comes off the seat the pressure changes and causes the trans to shift. When the trans shifts, the the govenor shaft slows down and the ball is pushed back up against the seat. I guess this is how it works. Im ready to put this thin back into the trans but dont want it to fall apart once its in there. Im just trying to understand how this thing works.

Bend the tang just enough so it won't fall out at any time, moved by hand or not. I think you are right basically about how it all operates.

Guvernor??

If this 200 is out of a 86-7 GN then it's not the right governor... 1 spring and one Very small wt and one large wt.
And no the balls should not fall out...

This is the only part you got wrong. It never slows down. It is at road speed. Whatever speed the drivesfhaft is at is what speed the govenor is turning. At the shift, speed doesn't change.

And, the balls should NEVER fall out. Ever. So if this is the case , it will not work as designed.

Thanks for the replies. This 200R is not of the GN type. It is a Bowtie Overdrives aka BTO 200r4. The trans is spotless inside after more than a year and over 2k miles of relitively hard driving. The pan was very clean. No metal, miniscule dust. it just shifted too early on its own. Ive drilled two 3/16 holes in the small weight. I may have slightly bent the weights by clamping in wise while drilling. This is where I ran into problems with the balls falling out. I will adjust the tangs to keep the balls in, install and post back after test drive. Prior to this mod, the trans was shifting on its own @ 4500 1st to 2nd and 4000 2nd to 3rd. Keep you posted with the results. Thanks again for the good advice. 200R's rule!!!!

As far as bending till they stay in you are screwed. Trust me. It will never work again, correctly anyway. Time to find a virgin one, make the adjustments without tweaking and go. Playing with that one is going to be a neverending nightmare and I dont know if you better half is ready for another marriage.:(

If you send me the ones you bent I can weigh and match and adjust here for you to start with. I got hundreds. Let me know but going about it the way you said is going to get you into trouble.

It will never work again,

Oh, what does he know? :D Bruce IS the guru, no doubt. I drilled mine to compensate for installing a set screw due to spitting springs and had to "tweak" the tang (that sounds sexual) because I bore down on the governor while drilling out some weight. The check ball would fall out and I had to bend the tang to limit the swing just enough for the check ball NOT to fall out. It was a miniscule adjustment, maybe not even measureable. Now if I can get Bruce to give me a solution to my intermittent l/u problem, life will be worth living again. :p

Thanks Bruce, I will take your advice and send the govenor to you. I would hate to have an ongoing problem with the matter. The wife still cant understand why I began to mess with it in the first place. The fact is, the engine mods I have done make most of thier increased power above 4000rpm up to around 5800rpm. When she drives the car she just always leaves it in the D poistion and lets the trans decide when to shift. Well, its shifting too early to get the most of the engine mods and I want the car to work the best for her. Anyhow, can you shoot me an email with a mailing address? ill send the govenor out to you along with a money order to cover return postage plus whatever you want for your services. Just give me a figure and Ill send it out along with a written description of the situation.

thanks bruce. fyi for the group, the govenor is in and was right on. trans is now shifting up WOT @ 5 to 55k rpm. Made a big difference in the overall performance of the car. shifting much more positivly on its own rather than manually. i got the shift kit on the way now and am awaiting its arival. I have a q on the filter pickup. Can I switch to a 700r4 style rear sump pickup filter and still use my stock 200r pan? Every now and then on full throttle upshifts my tranny seems to slide into upshift with a lame momentum. Im thinkin maybe the fluid is washing away from the pickup on hard acceleration causing a pressure drop. Whats the least I can do to address this possible problem? not sure if a drop pan will work the way my exaust is set up. Like to stay with the stock pan. John S.P. Md.

700r4 filter can't be used w/stock pan it will get crused, I think Bruce still makes a bottom feeder for stock pans but I guess it's a PIA to get in right. Not recommende but overfilling one pint to a quart may help, best is to get a gauge and make sure it is actually the pressure droping.

Purchase our pan. What you are trying to do will not work.

Why sacrafice a well built trans when you can "SOLVE" the problem . Yes it costs money but what in this world doesn't anymore? I am really glad all worked out. So I came close huh? Damn, maybe I am learning something....:)
