I am not sure but I believe I have lost the spring in the governor.
Car will not shift until I let off of the throttle( in any gear )...bummer

I have an Art Carr Extreme Duty + 10" Art Carr NL conv.

Ok when the previous owner had this transmission done the vendor did not install the transmission TCC connector and I am guessing the inside wiring might be gone as well. Who has what I need so I can read the 3rd and 4th gear on the ecm?
Is it common practice for aftermarket trannies to have the 3rd and 4th gear switches removed?

The ecm signal plug is still there but no plug in the tranny.

Figured since I needed to take it apart, might as well do it all at the same time.

Do I need a different governor sping for higher shifts?

Help

Thanks. I'll do that.

Edit - Oops not open on Saturday. I'll try again next week. :D

Update: This was exactly the problem or so I thought. I removed the pan to find the governor spring in the pan..LOL

Ok, used the set screw method to pin the spring from future launchings and while I was at it I drilled the small weight to counter the added weight of the set screw. I also needed 5500 shift points so I drilled some more to take some more weight off.

De-burred, cleaned, checked the balls, yada, yada. Governor, cover and seal looked great. Re-installed governor and filter, filled with fluid ( around 8.5 quarts)

Car will now not shift out of first....WTF no matter what the RPM or postion of the gear linkage.

Help. it has to be something simple( I hope ). I didn't mess with anything else in the tranny.Damn....

I had that same problem after I installed a shift kit. For me it was that I didn't have the TV cable hooked up correctly at the trans.

Like I said I haven't messed with anything else. However the problem is the governor again. Only this time the damn thing was damaged. Looks like I am in the market a new governor, prefferably pinned and setup for some 5500 shift points.

Shouldn't have drilled it at all. Shoulda installed the set screw and tried it BEFORE you drilled any more off. Get a new govenor and start over.

Russ,

Never short on being blunt are you....LOL

I didn't drill it just for the hell of it. I drilled it to at least offset the weight of the screw. Especially since my shift points were nowhere close to where they needed to be before the spring was launched into the pan. He-he-he was racing a STI on the Interstate. POS megashifter caused me to over rev. Have a set of Lightning Rods now....;)

I was extremely careful when I did this.

Originally, the spring was thrown off, so I did the set screw method. But I believe my set screw ( which was an allen head type ) stuck out too far from the weight causing a clearance issue, so the weight got bent and the check balls fell out, etc, etc
Nothing else was damaged, thank goodness.

Luckily I have all of the pieces. Didn't drive it far when the transmission wasn't working right.

Live an learn.

Mark from PTS is setting me up with a new one.

BTW: Russ, save your input for next month when I install the ME-R and the 83s...LOL jk :D

I don't mean to come across like that, really!!!! I've had too many tranny fluid shampoos from F&^%$# with stuff, so I feel your pain! It's nice when your all done and it works correctly though. Sounds like your back on track now, good luck and let the ME-R install begin!
