grey wire for gear indicator on shifter

Where does the grey wire for the gear indicator go to once it goes in the carpet. Mine was missing and I have a new one but not surewhere to took under the carpet for the original wire (drivers side, pass side, etc?)

It should tap into a grey wire under the dash where the ashtray would be if it didn't have a center console. The ashtray light wire. It might even still have the light socket on it with no bulb in it. It uses a piggyback tap type connector.
