How does a 3255-e compare to an ta-49? As far as relibility and performance? Spool time and lag? What down pipe size is best or can an stock down pipe be used?

Stock dp can be used, but I do recommend a 3" smooth bend downpipe if you plan on running the boost up there, and or maxing the turbo out. There have recently been some good posts about downpipes. My personal opinion is, a replacement downpipe is warranted once you get into the low 12's and want to go faster.

The factory heat shield bracket will need to be modified in order to get the heat shield re-installed tho. This is because the turbine housing bolts to the cartridge differently than an older T3/T4 series turbo. 4 bolts bolt the turbine housing to the chra vs 6. And the orientation of the dog eared bracket that connects to the heat shield question mark bracket is not the same. Unless PTE has recently addressed this issue within the past couple of months.

The GT3255E was specifically designed from the beginning to displace the TA-49 and TE-44 on cars with a stock D5 converter. It does spool up faster and will make slightly more power than a TE-44 at higher boost levels. This is due to the GT series compressor and turbine wheels used on the GT3255E.

You will also need a different wastegate actuator that is specific for the GT3255E if you are upgrading from a stock or TA series turbo. The bolt pattern on the actuators attachment bracket is different.
Hope this helps.

I thought the GT3255A has a TA-49 cover and the GT3255E has the T04E cover.. What is the difference in the two?

The gt32 produced 40 more ft lbs on the engine dyno than the ta49 .
With the stock d5 and a precision .63 turbine housing she spools great. Its good to the 11's and has ran a 10.50 before on a modded motor.

FastGN007,
Correct, the GT3255A uses a modified stock appearing TA compressor cover. Although I never sold one of those back when they were first introduced. The GT3255E gets the TO4E style PTE casted E cover. Same style cover that comes on a TE-44 but machined specifically for the GT series compressor wheel. As far as differences between the two goes, figure between 10 - 15 hp between the A and the E covers. The E cover is slightly more efficient at moderate to high boost levels.

the 49 makes more hp, the 3255 spools quicker...the 3255 is a smaller turbo....

thanks for the info. I ordered a 3255A last week and am looking forward to getting it in. I should have the motor together and the car on the dyno by the end of the month!
