I see melling makes a kit to upgrade the stock pump to high volume. I was wondering if anyone has done it and the beenfits seen (if any).

My motor has only 2500 miles on it, but the oil pressure is low for my liking. Thought I might try the pump first before I yank the motor out again.

I installed the Melling kit in my car about a month ago. I also installed a pressure guage at the same time so I cannot tell you what the pressure was before. It is about 90 psi when cold, but it drops when warm to about 25 at idle. They give you 3 different springs with the kit, I used the middle one. I would recomend installing a new timing cover if yours is worn. My cover was worn some and my main bearings have a little over 100,000 on them. Hal

The Buick oil pump is a horrible design. Steel gears in an aluminum housing just doesn't work except when cold. The housing expands more than the gears when hot and opens up the clearance in the pump. The HV pump helps a little. I got more idle pressure from closing the gap on the bottom cover to .001" than from going to the HV pump. I did it by searching through oil pump gaskets until I found the thinnest one.

oil pump

i drilled mine out to 1/2 in and put stock gears with plate. ta adjustable reg. 60 cold ,20 hot .decent for less than 25 bucks

You can get a HV cover for $125. Its a nice quality cover and it has the front crank seal on the outside of the cover. But get a couple of extra front seals. I couldn't get one locally.
