Has my tranny started to crap out?

Just wondering if my tranny is shot. I was out cruising tonight when I started to hear a loud noise. What its doing is, when I give it gas, first gear makes a loud, grinding, scratching kind of noise, second is the same only a "bit" louder, then it shifts into third, and its normal. ONLY first and second are "scratchy".

Also, when I put it into reverse, it wasn't moving, so I gave it some gas and caught the gear pretty hard, and loud.

The tranny was also a little bit low on fluid, so I topped it up, but the noise was still there. I also drove the car home(about 20 mins), mainly staying in first and second and it was scratching the whole way home.

I'm pretty positive its the tranny, but are there any specific things it could be?

Sounds like you've got a bad front (not overdrive) planetary. It's generating trash that's sticking the valves if it won't shift betond second. Time to yank 'er out.

When you reinstall the transmission, be sure to flush the cooler and lines thoroughly! That lurking trash can and will contaminate the rebuild.
