I'm wondering more about the tape or laminate that is over it. It should just be the sticker.

87 was just the sticker, earlier ones had clear laminate over it. Probably just more of that great GM quality control we all know and love.

Maybe during a repaint ? Jack up rear end and spin the wheels to verify the G80/posi rear end.

Assembly line workers weren't too particular about placement or creases. You should have seen the jacking sticker on my Maverick trunk lid, it was so creased it was illegible...

a lot of them look like that.. proper placement of that sticker wasn't a very high priority..
