i don't know if anyone here could answer this for me or not, but i'm intrested in going to college at monoha (don't know how its spelled, or pronounced), is there anyone here who goes/ went there? just looking for some thoughts on the school.

I went to UH Manoa way back in the early 80's. I'm sure alot has changed since then though.

what did you think of it back then?

do you hear anything about it now, good, bad, anything?

I'm going there now. I like the school (lots of chicks if thats what you want to know ;) ). Parking is a problem, but if you're dorming, then I guess it's not much of a problem. Send me a PM if you have any questions and I'll try to help.

I'm currently attending UH Manoa enroute of my EE degree. Cale is right about the chicks!!! Lots of'em! I look foward to my lunch breaks at the Campus Center. And you'll hear a lot of Obake stories (Ghost stories) on Campus. Parking is a bitch! I find myself parking a what feels like a mile away. Again like Cale said, if you're going to Dorm on campus...you dont have to worry about it. A moped would help if your classes are buildings apart...and walking just isnt fun. Good thing my EE labs are all in one building. Just my physics and religion classes are a bitch to get to..scenery is nice though :D UH has one of the best Architecture schools, as well as their Medical school. Because I work for an Electrical Engineer as well...I've been helping with ongoing UH Medical improvements and additions. They're building a Cancer Reasearch Center on the Manoa Campus and soon will be building a Med School Campus distant from the Monoa Campus on Kaka'ako's water front. The school is definetly expanding.

and an update on my EE labs or portfolio class....There arent any pretty girls in my classes....AGAIN! but my religion class has a cute hapa girl (I wish I were single) and cute petite boboda girl with straight teeth :D in my physics lab.

i've heard about the chicks! i'm not too worried about the parking, i'll probably get a goped where ever i go, my brother has one right now and there a blast to drive, and their light and clean enough to carry into class, and fairly cheap too. a big question i have is keep my buick, or sell it and get a beater? are there any problems having a tr over there, people wanting to take them off your hands for you? any worries about having one there? thats become a big concideration, if i stay around here i'll get a pos for school, come home on the weekends and take out the tr, if i go away i'll only have one car.

not a big enough reason to go or not go there, but something i've been wondering aobut.

I don't think there is much of a problem with buicks being stolen here in hawaii. It's mostly the imports that get stolen. There is a surprisingly large number of people who own TR's here in hawaii. I see atleast two while driving around everyday (and a lot of them at the track).

Yah, Imports are the craze here. Theives would rather jack an import, but dont underestimate them. If they want something...they will take it. I think the only thing about being here is because this island is so small, despite our over-population, word spreads fast. Keeping that in mind, IF you bring your car over and it gets stolen...you will notify us about it, and all of us will keep an eye out on it. From local paper ads, ebay ads, by word of mouth...whatever, we try our hardest for things like this. Gopeds are pretty much outlawed here. The police do act upon it and confiscate them. I've seen 3 kids get their gopeds get taken by a police officer; Pretty sad. I think youre better off getting a used 21spd or a BMX bike or a moped for on campus..but those get stolen too  like I said, they see something they like, they will take it. The other thing you can do as well to help in lessen tuition cost and if you dont mind the driving around....you can take your Major down at UH Manoa and take your pre-requisite or co-requisite at the community colleges. You'll get credit for them through the UH system. You just have to make sure that you have enough time to get between campuses.

getting closer to decision time, i'm hearing a lot of good, and bad stuff about the school, like any school. can you belive they make you do work there! who'd a thunk it?

anyways i've heard outsiders aren't liked at all, i've heard its ok too. what do you guys see? i know everyone is different but in general would i be thought of as some new guy that no one likes? how bad is it?

i have no hawaiian or anything like that in me, just a normal white guy.

There are so many military bases on the island and military personnel, it's really not a big deal. There are some areas of the island that I won't go, but that's kind of like me going and walking around downtown Harlem or the Bronx at night... But I've been here for 5 years and it's not bad at all. For someone who's never been out of the mainland or hasn't lived in the "spanish" areas of the mainland, it can be a little different. But not bad... Oh, and the people here generally are the friendliest people I've seen anywhere. And I've been ALL over the world, and from small town America (Maine which is known for being friendly).

Derrick

P.S. Oh, I'm a white guy (military) here.

Well said Derrick.

I think the weather should out-weigh any reason you have not to go to school here. The school is very good and you should fit in just fine. We make fun of everybody and anything, even ourselves. So don't worry about discrimination or not fitting in, you'll fit.....I just don't know where you'll fit (one mo Haole trying to squeeze in there okole on dis tiny island)
:D

One more thing before vacationing, er I mean coming here for school. To be more like a local, you'll have to see things from their perception. For example......You know how like in L.A or some urban part of the mainland where you have the "homeless"? Well here we don't say "homeless", we say "houseless". Hawaii is our "home", we just no more one "house". Understand? Perception.
Another example...Ok, if something got ripped off or stolen from you. You say "he stole this or I got jacked that" right. Well most locals here will say, "I never steal that, I was borrowing it Jack". So when you go the beach with your shiny new board and you see someone else shreading with it. That dumb local will almost always say "I was jus borrowing it". Just think, perception is everything and you'll fit in just right. Oh and don't forget to bring your nice, shiny Grand National (you do have one right) I need to borrow.:D  ;)

you guys here all seem to be good people, havent' met anyone here who isn't. i'm not hard to get along with at all i just heard some of the other people there arent' easy to get along with.
i know around here we have a ton of mexicans, not all are bad. but they are still generalized as being slime (some are just slimy) unless you get to know them. i really wouldnt' want to be one of them living here for the first few months. but as long as its as laidback as what i've seen when i've been there i don't see myself having any big problems.

when you say borrowing, do they ever give your stuff back?:D

while i'm thinking about it roughly how much does it cost to ship a car over from, lets say california? or anywhere else.

cost

I think the cost to ship a car over from California will range between $800-$1000.
