anyone ever had to replace the heater core in the 84 before? i got the blower motor off and ALL the hdwr out of the cover but cant seem to fanagle the cover out of the car? any tips or is it hopeless? i can see the damn thing and its just laughing at me. help.

I've done one...

I had to replace my leaking a/c accumulator, and figured while I was there I'd do the heater core too...I said...while I'm there...ya know, I don't want to do it 6 months done the road when I was there already.

Kind of a PITA though... I do know that the heater core they have listed is the wrong one...they'll tell you it's about $16 but that's the wrong one...the one you want it like $45-$50! The hardest part is puting everything BACK...the taking off isn't so bad. Just when you do re-assemble it, use LOTS of silicone to fill in the air gaps, and the seals, otherwise the blower motor will just be blowing the heated air into your engine compartment. Also give your "heater door hinges" and cable a couple of squirts of WD-40, or just replace them if they look "iffy". That should pretty much do it.

If you notice or can feel air coming from the seam after everything is all put back together, go you your local auto store or a heating/refrigeration store or wholesaler and ask if they have "permatex". This is a sorta tar like sticky material that they use in the refrigeration business to seal any air gaps...this stuff works GREAT!

Anyway...HTH...

John ;)

how the hell did ya get the plastic cover that goes over the AC and heater core out of the car without breaking it? am i just missing some step? i have all of the hdwr out 100% the cap is just flopping around but i cant get it off.

we are talking about the same cover right?..ther cover I'm talking about covers the a/c and heater core but it's not plastic...it's a fiber-like material...right?

anyway, behind the part of the cover that gets bolted to the firewall is REALLY sticky "goo." Take a utility knife and cut out around the the cover...I think I also used a LONG screwdriver to help pry, but like you said...be careful not to break it!

lemme know...

Your almost there

If you have it to the point where it is just flopping around your home free all you have to do is lift it out. The tricky part is making sure it doesn't get hung up on the heat sheild or the brackets in the back. Once you get the hang of it by getting it out the first time you'll see how easy it is (easy does not mean fun :) ). Don't give up and try not to get too frustrated.
Good luck!
