You were right on Chuck Leeper. The pick up tube was loose and the bolts were backed almost half way out.

I called my engine guy and he said is going to come the house himself and have a look at one or two of the bearings. When I drained the oil, it had the ominous metallic swirl to it but that might be from the initail start up/break in since the motor has only about 25 miles on it. Hoprefully we don't find anything but even if the bearings look O.K. should I worry about the cam bearings?

I would be worried every thing including the cam and bearings. Don't forget the turbo.

Personally if I paid good money to have a motor built and the oil pickup fell off, I would have the motor builder start from scratch with a bare block! You say you drove it 2 miles without ANY oil pressure?? I am sure everything is pretty much screwed up and wouldn't take a chance of a premature failure down the road if you just tighten up the pickup and put it back together.

Sounds like you took the pan off yourself which might end up hurting you in the end. I think I would have put it all on the builder to take it apart like someone else suggested.

Hope this turns out OK for you. Good luck.:(

Engine OUT on the floor, when the builder gets there. His deal. Bring it back when it's RIGHT.
Inspect it once he has it torn down.

Wow I guess I let him off easy. I did have it on jack stands with the pan off it when he got there. We looked at a couple of main bearings and some rods and they were perfect. They looked like the engine hadn't even been started!

It must have been getting some oil pressure. Now that I think of it it MIGHT have had about 10PSI or so cruising but nothing at idle. Anyhow, I put it back together and it seems to run fine. Oil pressure almost seems too high. It's around 40PSI at idle but cruising it's around 60-70 as it's warming up and more like 60 warmed up and this is with 40W oil.

Al (the engine builder) is a nice guy and he did a great job with the engine but stuff happens I guess. He was very apologetic and wants me to bring it by the shop so he can hear it run. I'm thinking though if I wind up ever needeing another rebuild I'll just do it myself. Anyone can make mistakes but I'd rather make my own from now on.

See how its running in 500 miles & a few 1/4 mile passes before giving it a clean bill of health! I really hope its fine & it runs perfect but give it a few miles before closing the book on it. Good Luck to you!

Thanks. I think it's gonna be alright. In hind sight I think I would pulled the motor and brought it back to the engine guy.
