I bought my GN last Friday and I am wanting to tune it, It is a completely stock GN, My turbo was bad so I put a turbo that a close friend of mine had on it and I have turned it way down because I was affraid of leaning it out, The turbo he had was a TOE4, TO4E, something like that anyway. I don't know a lot about these cars except that you have to be very careful with them. What kind of tool's do I need and what kind of mods do I need to do? Do I need to do away with the factory pump and add a manual fuel regulator? I want to keep my car stock, I'm not trying to hop it up, I just want to tune it so If I decide to run it a little hard sometimes it won't hurt it. Any suggestion's?

Thank's Dean

I'll start your off by giving you an el L
Before you do anything go here:http://www.gnttype.org/maint/basics.html
After you do that get a Scanmaster to help you see what's going on. The factory fuel pump is weak so plan on getting a higher flowing pump with a hot wire kit for it. Your friend might have given you a TE44 turbo which is about 2 steps up from stock so don't raise your boost without doing the spring cleaning, pump, scanmaster and boost gauge.

Thank's for the info, The turbo I got from him is a TO4E or TOE4, It was bought new and run for three day's on a SAAB and the transmission blew so the guy took the turbo off and sold it to my hired hand. It look's a little bigger than the factory turbo. I'm assuming my car had the original turbo on it because it had GARRETT wrote on it. The one I got from my friend also is a GARRETT. I think the SAAB was a 4 cyl.

OK, I though you might have just mixed up the letters some.:) Got no idea what that turbo is so either way do the spring cleaning and deal with that later.

Sure will, Ive already done the plugs and oil change and also pulled the intercooler off and washhed it out, Someone has already put a good set of wires on it so I'll probably leave those, I have also put new rotors, bearings, seals and pads on the front. I don't know if anyone has put a good fuel pump in it or not, someone however did put another gas tank in the car because the fuel neck is a little to long, Stinkin tag door won't close all the way, Guess I'll shorten it and use a hose and acouple of clamp's so the tag door will close back all the way. Should I maybe check the fuel pressure first before pulling the tank and replacing the pump? What's your opinion?

Thank's Dean Griffin

That's a real good idea. Get a fuel pressure gauge on a hose that you can temporarily put under the wiper blade to see the pressure rise with boost. Of course, this means you also need a boost gauge to see how much boost you are producing. The ScanMaster will get you by for monitoring knock but down the road, a knock gauge is good insurance also.

Like Pronto said, a hot wire is essential. This is a good one and since you seem to be a DIY guy, it'd be right up your alley. I use this one too: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/fuelsystem/hotwire.html

Have fun. This never ends.
