Hi,

I am having some problems after my rebuild and I am hoping someone might be able to help.

1 – I filled the trans with the engine running and at (what I thought) was operating temp. I let the car cool and then drove it about 2 miles – no problem. I then let it cool, and started it the next day and drove about 6 miles (so the trans got warmer). When I got home, there were no issues, but about 3-5 minutes later, the transmission pushed about ¼ of a quart of fluid up out of the dipstick and all over my driveway. Could this be that the trans was overfilled or is this a sign of another problem?

2 – I put the car into first gear with the shifter and then gave the car some gas. The rear tires broke loose and, while doing the burnout, the transmission shifted to second even thought the gear shift was still in first. Is this normal? Does this trans have a override to keep you from burning it out?

3 – After running the car and shutting it off, there is a ‘sucking’ sound coming from the dipstick tube that occurs for a couple of seconds. Is this normal? I have owned other 200-r4’s and never noticed this.

4 - The transmission doesn't seem to want to go into 4th gear. I think that I have the TV cable too 'tight'. I assume that teh 'tighter' it is, the later the shifts.

Thanks!

I'm no expert here but
  1. Where is it on the dipstick? Overfill to make sure a stock 200-4R filter has pickup is a good idea but how far over might you be?
  2. That's a normal feature of some tranmsisions. On the 200-4R I'm not sure... Might vary by valvebody. I don't remember that ever happening on my CZFs.
  3. Dunno. Is it actual suction?
  4. If a trans has grossly low TV pressure it can also delay shifts until higher RPM.

Hope you get some better answers and good luck.

Sounds like your vent could be blocked. Little plastic tube on the top of the case.

I've checked that, but I am not 100% sure if it is OK. I can feel the tube and it feels stiff (like it is old and hard), but is there a good way to see if it is blocked when the trans is in the car??

The mechanic said that the filter may not be all the way on and the transmission could be sucking air from the top of the pipe thus bypassing the filter and that may be causing the sucking sound from the dipstick.

Do you guys think that the transmission would generate enough heat that it would spit up fluid if the breather was blocked??

Are you sure it's suction/vacuum and not pressure escaping? If the filter is sucking air it could be building pressure in the case and if the vent tube is clogged combined with the heat it would come out the dipstick tube. Let a buddy put a (little) compressed air down the dip tube while you put your finger over the vent tube to see if it's clogged. Don't blast air down the tube because you don't want to blow any case seals out. Your 4th gear shift problem could be from low line pressure from the filter neck seal.
