I am buying a 1985 GN (hot air car) I could care less about keeping it stock. I want a clean car that car run well at the track/street. I am looking to go mid 10's what is going to take? There are ton a threads for the 86-87 cars but I cant seem to find any for the pre 86 cars. Thanks for the help.

Hi Lvnspeeed,
Mid 10s is a pretty high bar for a Hotair, so your going to need a ton of determination and cash to get one there.

Are the motors that different from the IC car to the Hot air cars beside the IC? I dont care about keeping it hot air. I actully perfer to IC it.

There are some differences between the blocks, but nothing to stop you from converting it over to an IC'd engine. They are people on this site that have done it and can give more information about than me.

Even if you do the conversion, mid 10s are not going to just land in your lap. I know plenty of people with 86/87 cars that still trying to break into the 10s. Mid 10's can be done, but it's quite a journey.

Mid- tens in a Hot Air? Forget about it and get and 86/87 up front. The main problem with the Hot Air cars in the location of the turbo. This limits Turbo size as well as dowpipe size. My two cents. Brad

It doesn't take a "ton" of money just some inovation and some research to get there. You also need to learn to do a lot of the work yourself if possible, that will save you $$. It can cost a lot if you want it to, but an IC car isn't exactly cheap either if you want to run 10's consistantly. Low 11's are possible on a hot air maybe even high tens but not without some homework and tuning, if you want to get there faster then you might want to consider an intercooled motor. Hey a lot of folks told me low 11's were impossible and well that's not true anymore. And with some ideas in the works who knows what can be done.

I can easily do the work myself..... Looking for a setup anyone have some suggestions?
Well, I think it can be done since you don’t care about leaving it stock, or HA, and can do the work yourself, so ...... the sky is the limit right?
Still want to do it with a 231CI?
Stock bottom end, girdled, stroked?

However, Easiest and cheapest way with a V6 IMHO, is to buy a proven SII - Low 9 sec car, turn the boost down and go run it.
(As stated by Brad, that will be IC'd)
You know, after that mid 10 sec slip, you will want to go low 10's, than high 9's ........... So, you will be able to run whatever you run, as long as you don't detonate it.
