I picked up a stock 85 hot air engine for my sand rail. I'm looking for parts recommendations. right now I'm just looking to get the engine running smoothly for a season before I completely rebuild it. Ive heard that the engines are prone to overheating and I plan on running a large aluminum radiator as well as an oil cooler. my stock exhaust manifolds were starting to crack so I picked up an aftermarket exhaust on ebay. since I don't have to worry about any emissions what can I get rid of? I see I can buy an egr blocker plate. Do I need any tuning or anything for this? I've also seen the later model ecm swap. Is that worth doing now or later when I completely rebuild? Right now I just want the engine to run smoothly and efficiently. next year will be the e85 intercooled rebuild. thanks

If you want to tune the car you'll need to do the ecm swap and get a scan master at the least. It will help you to understand the engine more and ultimately you will be able to keep a close eye on knock retard aka detonation. Good luck with the build

I've seen custom chips for sale. I think one was cotton or something like that. Is that a good performance chip? With the newer ecm, has anyone tuned one with hp tuners?
